Look At What Hubby Brought Home From Work Now...

A warning... this is not a pretty story so read at your own risk.

Yeah... really. He messaged me from work and said come outside. He opened the back of our truck and this is what was inside.

I've named her (it's a heifer! (girl)) Blessing.

As I have mentioned before (and no debates please, it's not like I'm fond of all this either) my husband is a feed truck driver/maintainance man for a cattle feed lot. This little girl was born there just about an hour ago. I named her Blessing because it is amazing that she was born at all. Generally when the heifers come in they get abortion shots to prevent the mothers from dying during birthing. This mother didnt get one because she was in a group of cows from Hawaii that were not supposed to have been exposed to bulls. Babies born on the lot often die if left in the pens with their mothers because they get trampled or lose their Mom and don't get milk. The feed that is fed to the cows also tends to make it so the babies lungs and stomachs don't form properly which makes them very short lived. On occasion one will beat the odds and live long enough to make it to the sale barn to make more money for the boss (although generally only about $30 per calf REALLLLLL low because everyone knows the fed lot calves aren't always the best at surviving). I know this is terrible but they were just going to take this little girl to the "dead pile" and leave her to die so my husband brought her home. We have no idea how long we will have her for but we will love her for the time we get. We are going to clean her up and get her started eating and hope for the best.

Oh and yes, we've bottle fed and cared for calves in the past and no, she isn't coming in the house

That is so sad that someone would just leave an animal to die. Good thing your husband brought that baby home so that way she has a least some chance of making it.

I love the name!

Nothing wrong with earning an honest living.

So, you gonna raise it up for slaughter yourself? I see some nice steaks in the making.

Thank you. It would be nice if when she can get along on her own, you guys donated her to a childrens zoo, or rescue, or maybe a farm somewhere were she can just be a cow.

Thank you everyone.

No slaughter for her... if she makes it she will live here with us on our farm. No need to send her to a petting zoo or farm, she's already on one We've already got a horse, sheep, chickens and ducks so I guess a cow will fit right in

I'm not fond of hubby's job but he loves it and sticks with it so I can't complain. It keeps the bills paid and the fids spoiled

We can already tell she is a fighter because she is trying to stand up. When hubby gets off work we're going to go get her some synthetic colostrum since she didn't get it from her Mom to give her a better chance.

I am just glad that hubby's boss is off today; he would have insisted that she go to the dead pile or be left where she was.

Geez Halo, you sound like me! LOL! I try to save 'em all. That little heifer is sooooo beautiful! Have you gotten any colostrum in her yet? Mucho importante! And if you want, I'll take her! I miss my cows!
