Thumbs down Those Forgotten Basement Birds

I'm scared to think about how many people have birds in their basement (because the dog/cat/kid is jealous of the bird, or whatever) that they don't really fully take care of.

Last night I met these people, friends of my boyfriend, and they had these two cockatiels in the basement. I asked to meet them, so we went downstairs. They had no seeds, their cage was open, and I asked the lady if she fed them everyday. "You don't need to eat everyday," She cooed to the little birds.

One of the 'tiels had no tail.

I am going to go back there in a few days or a week when I get some money, and offer her $50 or so for the birds. I don't think she really likes caring for them much, and it saddens me to see them in that condition.

On the other hand, then I will have ten birds.

I hate the way this world is, how so many people don't take care of the animals they have... but instead feel they are their ''property''

mmm so sad

i used to make myself cry when i was young - thinking of all the abused and neglected animals

i had to quit that sh*t or i would be so upset all the time

why were the tiels in the basement
i cant imagine they were 'loud' and bothersome :(

I hope you're able to take them in, even if it's just a temporary situation. If 10 birds is too many for you, look at them as fosters and then you can find that perfect home for them-not that your home wouldn't be perfect ;)

My Jack was basement bound too. The family that had him thought that he was too noisy...what? A Nanday Conure noisy? You don't say... When the area that he lived in was flooded, someone rescued him from the flooded basement. The people who owned him didn't even want him back. I snatched him up and have been spoiling him with love, affection, attention, and enrichment ever since.

I agree that even though you may not be able to keep them, they need someone to rescue them! Good for you!

Well if you can take them, it would be an improvement to their situation even if you have to find a different permanent home for them.

My Diddle spent 10 years in a basement (before we got him of course lol) with only food and water given to him. No attention, cuddles, or love. So now I get mass amounts of cuddles

The saddest one I took in was locked in a closet for months. In the dark. rotten food and GREEN water. They kept him in the closet because he was noisey and because of the "bugs"
the bugs, we fruitflies from decaying fruits in the gross food. NOT from the bird.

Those are some sad stories. It's hard for me to comprehend people thinking of their parrot as a burden, but I guess it happens all too often.

You're right, I have to get them out of there, even if I plan to find them a better home in the future. I probably would just keep them though, because my 'tiels seem to get along quite well and the more the merrier, right?

The closet is even worse! I am surprised that he survived that, living in the dark. Glad to know he has a better life now, though. It does make me sad to hear about birds in bad situations, I just want to rescue them all!

Good luck, I hope she isn't offended when you offer to buy her birds from her. Keep us posted on the progress.
