Question Kind of curious.. do birds have the same sense of time as us?

You know with some animals they don't really know what an hour is.... they don't really understand being gone all day or just 2 hours...

Do birds know how long we're gone for when we're at work?

It seems like Jer is more excited when I get home from work, he chirps and comes to the front of the cage and everything.... then if I leave for just an hour he's like "yeah whatever" when I come back in....

I was just curious how good their sense of time is.....

What about eyesight.... anyone ever find a site that shows you what they see? Sometimes you can find sites like that that show you how dogs see....

Thanks! I was just curious if anyone knew

Don't know about other birds, but my RN's have an amazing sense of time. They know that if it takes me 3 min to get from the aviary to my deck and 2 minutes to get back to the aviary (at top speed) they have plenty time to "play" with the smaller and weaker before i can stop them. Does that answer your question? If Jer is like "yeah whatever' after an hour, you most probably got back before he could finish whatever he was doing. Joking! No idea but will be interesting to find out.

I know, I'm so sorry to hear about your birds :(

It wasn't your fault, you did all you could do and at least now the smaller birds are much happier on their own side of the aviary

I think they do. I know my tiels Chloe and Moe will start to scream at the top of their lungs at 10pm on the dot to let me know it's bedtime. They are in a room with no windows so you would think they wouldn't have the slightest clue what time it is but they do. It doesn't matter what time they are uncovered either, I had a family emergency a couple weeks ago and didn't get them uncovered until 4:00pm (I felt so bad) but when 10pm came they were screaming for bed.
Obviously they don't sit and say "Oh, it's 10pm" but I think they have a sense of time. They know the difference if you are gone for a long time or just a little while. I wanna know what they do when I'm not here, lol. One of these days I'm gonna set up a camera and watch...

That's so funny that they scream for bed! I love that...

I was thinking the same thing.... my fiancee and I actually looked up cheap cameras so we can see what he does all day!

We want one that you can link up to on your computer to watch them during the day....

I'm fairly sure mine do. They expect to be let out on time and will start hollering even when we try to sleep in (which happens very rarely) and Lilly is always very observant about bedtime and will chew us out if we stay up too late.

they would have a 24 hour day like we do but I dont think its as fine as knowing its 10pm or 12am etc. It would be simply routine that trains them to know when it is time to go to bed. If you go to bed at a regular hour everyday you dont need to look at a clock to know when you are tired do you? You dont need to know its 12pm so that means its time to be hungry and have lunch. I wake up every morning at 4.30am and most of the time its without an alarm clock. Routine has imbedded that time into my subconscience. Would be the same with birds. Their instincts would tell them what time to be awake. If a bird had interrupted sleep because of its owners maybe only got 3 hours sleep instead of 8 I bet he isnt sleeping in until 12pm he is still awake and rustling at the crack of dawn!
