Red face Why can't cockatoos have avacados? Why does it kill them? Anyone know? Theories, etc?

Now, I KNOW IT WILL KILL THEM, but why do avacados kill cockatoos? I have always wanted to know, does anyone have any ideas?

just found this:

The skin and pit of this popular fruit had been known to cause cardiac distress and eventual heart failure in pet bird species. Although there is some debate to the degree of toxicity of avocados, it is generally advised to adopt a "better safe than sorry" attitude toward them and keep guacomole and other avocado products as far away from pet birds as possible.

Ok. Thanks you guys, I was wondering about that, but I didn't want to risk giving anything contaminated by avacados to my babies.

The pit, fruit and the skin can cause edema of the throat and chest area, heart muscle failure, fluid-filled lungs and abdomen. Microscopic tissue examination has revealed severe cellular damage to cardiac muscle cells and the liver and kidney.

Avocados and chocolate. I've not as of yet found out the "whys" of it just that it is toxic to parrots. There are some studies out there that even say avocados are toxic to any animal smaller then a cow, except humans.

If anyone does that to their bird I will personally come over there and pop them in the mouth!
