Relocating the birds to the basement?
I know the title sounds bad, but it should draw lots of attention!
My flock has a decent size bungalow that they let me live in. The living room has 4 soon to be 5 cages, its starting to look like the crazy bird guy, not to mention the mess they make in my nice living room! I have a fully finished basement and have been considering moving them down there. Not sure of the dimensions but this picture is taken from the middle of the room, so its twice that size. Its only got one small window, but I could research and setup some full spectrum lighting for them. Winters are cold but I keep the house at 70, basement is a little cooler by a few but I can fix that easily. All of my flock are already used to this room as we go down and hangout. ![]() I worry about Jerry my Nanday, he loves to watch out the windows and scream and cats and squirrels. Overall I dont think moving the flock downstairs will be too stressful on them but you never know. This isnt an effort on my part to move them off to the side or anything like that, I'll spend just as much time with them as I do today. Anyone else have a bird room in the basement? |

We have a basement that we spent over 30,000 remodeling, it is nicer that my living room
![]() Looking at your pics, I would suggest adding FS Lighting, to the room. They are gonna need it.

looks like a decent set up. I also suggest the FS lighting for each cage, and a hepa filter, possibly with the ultra sterilization unit, because Asper spores like to be in darker, damp places. Just being under the ground(basement) will make the walls damper.

Just an FYI, I know someone from another board that had their fids in a finished basement. Well their house caught on fire and she lost a lot of her babies because she couldn't get down there! That is what I would worry aout also. She was a rescue!

My birds are not in the basement, but live in our finished garage. (The old owners of the house needed office space and took half the garage and converted it into a tiled office. Its really nice, has its own Heating/AC and ventilation system. For me it works, there are two windows that face the East so they get plenty of sunshine in the morning and in the evening I turn on lamps. As long as it is climate controlled I wonldn't see why there would be a problem.

Thanks everyone.
The basement is not damp at all or anything like that, I do know how bad that can be but its not a problem where I live. If i install some full spectrum lighting in the room I think things will be alright. In the summer I have cages that can fit out the door and I let them enjoy the sunlight and fresh air. I'll think about it more but Its looking like a pretty good idea. |
