My brother-in-law's mother had a B&G macaw. She was beautiful but let me tell you, she could be inside with all the windows and doors closed and if she let out a scream you could hear her outside. I had to be careful when getting my birds because there are other people in this house I live in. The Hahns Macaw and Pionus were both recommended for apartment living. I got the Hahns. He is a big bird in a little bird's body (think of a Jack Russell Terrier). He can be loud. I also got an African Grey who is also sometimes recommended for apartment life and he can be loud too but I think he is noisier than your average. Still, neither of them can rival the big macaw I knew in volume.

Good luck. Does it have to be a real big bird?

My Miligold is a fairly quiet bird 90% of the time... hes a talker/chatterer. However, when he wants to he lets out one hoot of a call. My Severe however, can peel the paint off of the wall. IMO Severes have the most obnoxious calls out any bird I have had the "not so" pleasure of hearing scream. I wouldnt last a week in an apartment with my flock. Would not recommend a Macaw in an apartment. You would get evicted. Even the mini Macs are noisey!

Large macaws are noisy at dawn and sunset and would be too noisy for an apartment. I would consider a small macaw over a large macaw although they can be noisy too, maybe a severe, yellow collar, noble or hahns, they are adorable and aren't quite as loud.

Severes are horrible, trust me I know. Mine is the loudest one in the house and the Yellow Collar a close second... they make make my conure seem "mute." Severes when they get excited or just call, its very L-O-U-D. I am sure anyone with one knows what I mean.

Greys might be a better choice

If you want a large bird but are in an apartment I would more recommend a Congo African Grey or a Timneh African Grey. They are not screamers or loud. The do whistle and make noise but the volume is a lot lower and not irritating. And, most of them talk and are so entertaining.

I have Greys and Umbrella Cockatoos. And when the Toos decide to cockatoodledoo it is loud and you can hear them outside my house.

My CAGs are VERY noisy first thing in the morning! When I let them out of their cage they are so excited they make ever such alot of noise for a good twenty minutes or so, by that I mean ear-piercing noise!
