I finally found a vet that will see my birds!!
I live in rural Arkansas and all the vets we have around here won't see birds. So, when my little ones need to see a vet the closest one is 2 hours away. I have called every vet around to see if they have experience with exotic birds and none do. My fear has always been that something will happen and I'll need to see a vet right away and wont be able to.
Well, I switched the vet that I use for Gizmo and Gus (my puppies) to one that was highly recommended by a friend. After talking to him I found out that he has avian experience and he was so excited that I had birds. He was especially excited about Petey (my Nanday) because he has a Nanday and a Sun conure and he wondered if I would bring Petey in to see if his Nanday might get along with her. He is interested in them breeding. He seems like an excellent vet and I can tell that he loves birds. Of course they will still see an avian vet for check ups but I'm so delighted that I have one for emergencies as well. If anyone else lives in Arkansas and would like his name I can give it to you. As it is extremely difficult to find a vet with avian experience in this area. |

that sounds good... but I would be weary of a vet who wants your bird to meet his.
Any avian vet wouldn't do this before your birds both have been checked and tested (because of the spread of avian diseases). He may be a good vet, but it doesn't sound like his bird experience extends beyond ownership. And it would scare me that my vet would want to make my pet a breeder! But I am a pessimist when it comes to these things. I haven't met him, therefore I cannot make an accurate assumption. Personally, I would only take my birds to this guy for emergencies. I would drive the two hours for the true avian vet. (I drive over an hour to my vet even though I have three pretty good ones within fifteen minutes of me.)

I'm sure he would make sure he did a full exam on Petey before he introduced them. I'm going to take them all in for a little checkup with him so that he has knowledge of each one if an emergency were to arise. I'm just so excited that there is someone close that will be there if needed, you know. And I wouldn't mind Petey breeding with the other bird if that were possible, but I don't consider any of my birds breeders ya know. My birds haven't ever mated with another bird.
I really don't think he had any ill intentions about suggesting that. He really seems like a caring vet and very concerned with the pets well being. But I do agree with you I mean I wouldnt turn them into breeders and they will continue to see their avain vet. I think that is important. |
