I'm new too. I've been on this board maybe 2 weeks. Got my first bird 2 weeks ago too.
When I met my cockatiel he came to the front of his cage... and was like *Hi, how are ya! Can I go home w/ you* ...I got to play with him & we just clicked. I knew he had to come home... not an impulse buy though... I'd seen about 5 other birds that week. I'm happy as I can be. (I live in an apartment too and so far hes not loud enough to bother anyone) You'll find the right bird too.

My budgies can actually be louder than my green cheek! My green cheek only gets loud (and not that bad either) when he hears my keys in the door when I come home from work. Otherwise, when he's on my shoulder he talks (his own language...can't understand a thing he says LOL) and when he's with the other birds or on his playstand he whistles occasionally. He's playful and happy, gets along with all my other guys, and is an all around sweetie.
I agree with those who say don't get a "starter bird"...that's how I've ended up with 5, and when I retire, I'm gonna get the one I really want, either a Quaker or a Pionus. Of course, my other guys are here forever even if I do get another. |

I agree that if you can find a local rescue and possibly volunteer there it is a great way to be exposed to many different kinds of birds and to also find out if birds are for you. You can also see about fostering for a rescue as well, they have birds of all sizes that need foster homes and if for some reason you find out that it's not something you can do, they will take the birds back and find them another home.
If you do foster for a resuce, they should provide the cage, food, vet care, etc. and you just provide the home, care and love.

Well I'm in a very small place and so I'm limited, unfortunately, to pet stores nearby. I am planning to travel in january to an aviary in another province to get a budgie. I may be able to visit with them and meet some other types of birds too.
