Bird antics that make our heart pound!

We are all sitting around enjoying our breakfast and the next thing I know Brodie (Ekkie) flies off his playpen towards to dog! I fly towards them dropping my coffee cup and what do I see is Brodie's leg in Circe's (Dog) mouth! Now I am hyperventilating and screaming at the same time (It is possible). I run to separate them and discover that Brodie leg is actually hanging on Circe's fir outside her mouth. Circe stands very still and lets me get Brodie off of her. Brodie is acting like that was a great adventure and Circe gave him a kiss.

I am still trying to put my heart back in my chest, cleanup coffee and not strangle a bird.

I should have know that they would be okay (Circe and Brodie) they loooove each other, but I just don't trust it.

So much for a relaxing morning.

I know how you feel. Banjo seems to think its great fun waiting until the right moment before flying off onto the floor. The dog hears him and immediately runs for him. I dont think she would actually hurt him intentionally since we trained her since she was a puppy to just sit and watch things like lizards and birds instead of hurting them but it still scares me to death.

I never ever have my birds out unless the dogs are locked out of the room/house. Too much can happen in the blink of an eye.

Yeah, I'll be moving out in a couple of weeks so the bird and the dog living together is a temporary thing since banjo will be coming with me but shayla wont. I cant really just start locking shay out since she has been our only pet for 6 years and is super attached to being around us whenever she can. I've cuddled the bird and the dog at the same time and when they're both calm shay just sniffs banjo and then loses interest. She just gets excited and wants to see what he is. I'd never leave them unsupervised though.

I don't let my bird out around my dog or cat. i take her in the bathroom and lock the door behind me. You never know what a dog or any animal will do to a bird. they kill from instinct. We must be the protector of all our animals and never put them in harms way.

I live with three birds and three cats. One of the cats has to be locked up during birdie playtime, but the other two have lived in peaceful harmony for the past two years. You have to know your animals, and understand that there is always a risk. My roommate's cats are afraid of the birds, and have never shown the slightest interest in them, even when the birds fly past them (or in some cases, try to land on them).

I understand that it's a risk, and most cats could NOT be allowed to be out with the birds like this, but every person has to make the decision for themselves and their personal animals. Just my opinion.

SOmeone at work saw my pic. of my green cheek on my desk. He told me they used to have one also but the dog killed it. It made me so mad that I told him I couldnt discuss it. I dunno if you can ever trust a dog around a bird.

The funny thing is the dog and the the bird love each other. Circe (dog) was the first mammal that Brodie made noise for. When Circe and I get home from work the first thing that she does is run for Brodie. Brodie gives her a big happy hello. They are always trying to kiss each other through the cage. I do not allow it.

My cat is afraid of Brodie. Although they are coming to an understanding. I am slowly trying make sure everyone gets along. I don't think that it is right for me to separate everyone. With a lot of time and patients I can make sure everyone understands the rules. It will make a happier household for all of us.

I know what I have said is very controversial. Many feel that if you have birds you can not have dogs, cats and even children. Many feel the other way. It is a choice and decision we all must make.

I wouldn't say that. I think that for the most part they will agree that as long as any exposure is supervised most will think it is OK.

I think the only way my dog would hurt my bird is to play too rough with it
or paw at it.
