Poor little Budgies

I'm sad today. I saw that Petsmart has a big Christmas add out and you can clip a coupon for $100 off a puppy (what is that like 2% off their price, lol) and You can get a baby budgie for $8.88 and a teeny starter cage kit for under $30. Poor babies ending up in homes unprepared because grandpa found the ultimate last minute spontaneous gift!!!

There were about 20 protesters outside our mall that has a pet store that sells a lot of puppies (all from mills). A pet can be the most wonderful gift, but the receiving end needs to do their research! It's really sad that for the most part the animals are treated like products that can just be returned or are wrongfully cared for (example would be oh a bird is cool cause it can just sit in a cage all day and look cool).

Poor babies AND poor parents from what I understand. "Of Parrots and People" claims that Petsmart uses a bird-mill for the birds it sells. And it describes the conditions of these places and it's horrible.

Don't know how anyone in their right mind can impose an animal onto someone else as a gift. Even the smalles bird is alot of work. Goes to show that there's still the widespread attitude that birds are trinkets.

I do think a lot of well meaning people slip over the line with pet gifts, because they don't understand all the ins and outs. I love cats and birds (well I love all animals), but don't have the life style that would allow me to be a good dog owner (guardian...whatever). I can easily see how someone would think a puppy would be a perfect gift for me -- I love animals, I live alone, I keep carrying on about needing more exercise -- heck sometimes, I think I need a dog. So, I do see how mistakes are made, even with careful thought. A lot of shelters won't adopt out at Halloween and really close to Xmas for these reasons.

You cant even imagine all the calls I am getting to see what birds I "sell"
In a few months, I will be getting calls asking to put birds in my store on "consignment" because they are no longer wanted....

and we wonder why shelters are so over run................

I got a call a few days ago from an older lady who wanted to buy a tiel for her mom for x-mas. I cringed internally. Obviously, I do not have tiels and I could give her no suggestion other than craigslist. I have a feeling she had no idea what I was talking about though.

Our local animal shelter has holiday deals on adopting pets!!!! Cats for $20! Dogs for $50!!!!

(I hate it... I hate the idea of pets as gifts... who's to say the person wanted it anyway? or wanted that particular species/breed? who's to say they didn't want the opposite sex? or color? or size? *ugh*)

Petsmart doesn't sell puppies...? Do they mean off the adoption fee of one of their partners (rescues)?

An ad in the classifieds the other day was for a free hamster that someone got as a WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT. They didn't even take into account WHO was getting the present, yet they gave a live animal as a "party favor".
