Now that's a vet!!

Almost 2 weeks ago now I took my new Blue Crowned Conure, and Ramone my 35 yr old Amazon to see Dr. Laura Wade, Avian Specialist. They had beak and nail trims, and basic bloodwork, gram stain and overall check ups. The conure also is having DNA checked for sex so I can finalize a name.

As I was taken to the examining room I was given a folder full of all kinds of info. Nutrition guidelines, toy ideas, articles, etc. I had a great time flipping through all this stuff as I am a bird info junky! Some was old hat to me, as I am so well informed by everyone here, but some was new too.

She spent over 2 hours with us that day. She left no stone unturned as she asked questions about diet, exercise, environment and so forth. I left there with all kinds of pellet samples, my notebook, and a head full of answers to questions that I had been pondering. The total bill for our time spent together was $486.00. That was for just the basics on 2 healthy birds.

I will not lie - as I wrote the check I thought to myself - "Geez - I won't bring 2 at a time again!" But my after thoughts were much more realistic.
I have now decided that I want her to be my daughter's pediatrician. Never have I had a doctor spend so much time and attention on me or my kids!

Yesterday I received a big envelope in the mail. Inside were all of the detailed reports concerning the bloodwork that my fids had, gram stain reports and a whole bunch of jibberish that I do not understand, but am greatful that I have for future reference. In addition to that were write ups for each of my babies. TWO FULL PAGES TYPED FRONT AND BACK! Yes there were tidbits of info that were cut and pasted I'm sure, but she also took the time to put in print her recommendations and behavior modifications to try with each of these birds. She totally personalized her reports for each bird based on the results of their test and her personal observations.

Personally, I feel compelled to send her another check. I have never before received this kind of service from ANY medical professional. I feel complete trust in her care. I feel like she actually KNOWS my birds, and cares about them as my pets.

I am so thankful to LisaB for the recommendation to go to Dr. Wade. She is a treasure you just have to share!

(I'm still waiting for the DNA results on my BCC-keep you posted!)

Wow, very impressive. You are very fortunate to have her as a vet. You mentioned that you are compelled to send her another cheque but perhaps she would really appreciate a note thanking her for her attentive service and great information. She sounds like someone who does her work for the love of birds.

Question

What kind of blood test, and what is a gram stain? When I took my amazon to the vet, the only blood test was for sexing, and the only other test I know of was to test his fresh poop, but that test is only done once a year, or my vet won't see my bird.

Dr. Wade

I own a bird store in Rochester, NY and we regularly here good things from her and her associate Dr. Adamcak (sorry about the spelling). My vet will also communicate w/ her on various procedures. It's nice to know there are still plenty of caring vets around.
