I'd just sit down and lay it all out for him, he's basically getting $500 for FREE. But will you be able to pay that and still afford any vet care needed for this poor fid? It makes me sick when people neglect their animals and treat them like...well...animals

I know you want the bird and want to help, but if you only have $500 and spend it all on the bird, how will you get it a cage, toys, food, veterinary care, and all the other things it needs? Maybe there is another way...maybe the man can be convinced to take the bird to the vet if the need were explained to him? I don't know anything about treating pluckers but I am sure there are some other very qualified people here who could help you. Hope you can work something out.

Be carefull with what you're doing. A plucking bird is a huge responsablity and that problem is still baffling people with years and years of experience. A good diet and attention is great but it could take years to understand what is triggering the problem.
500 might seem like a lot but for a too? What if the bird is plucking due to a medical condition? 500 can be spent pretty fast when it comes to bringing a too for a vet visit... Not to mention that a good diet will be quite costly, and toys? That's a whole other money pit! And what kind of too is it? Are you ready to put up with the noise? Do plenty of research... you want to be sure that you're doing the right thing or else it could end up that the bird will be the one paying for your mistakes... |

Have info. Owened parrots before. He is a large breed cockatoo. Have to find out the kind, i know it's expensive and have money to pay. Don't mind noise not even the noise of an electus ear shattering.

You might have some info but you need cockatoo specific info. I'm sure an elclectus is of no comparison to any large cockatoo. I know you're set on doing the right thing but this seems very impulsive. You should be asking yourself sooooo many questions before bringing a bird home. You'll have this too with you for the rest of your life.
Perhaps the bird is not plucking because of it's owner? What will you do if you acquire the bird and it's absolutely not the one for you? Are you absolutely sure that you can support the need of a parrot so large, let alone a too? What will you do if the too hates being rehomed and the stress causes him to pluck even more or even mutilate? I guess I'm just overly concerned because I know you are young (even though that's not always a factor...), and this whole situation looks like an impulse buy. I don't mean any harm, just want to make sure that you've considered all sides of this. If you haven't been already, go to www.mytoos.com and be honest with yourself, make sure you can meet the birds needs. Cockatoos are the number one bird in rescues because lots of people get them for the wrong reasons and just can't handle them. You'd be wise to spend some time with the bird to make sure you are comfortable with it, and it is comfortable with you. Last edited by Adi; 04-26-2005 at 12:08 AM. |
