Finches, like many of the smaller birds, can fledge from the nest and mate/raise a family right after. Finches though are usually bred when they are 6-9 months old, though it's usually best to wait for the finches to be around a year old (10+ months on) before being bred.
As far as a finch being fully weaned, 5-8 weeks would probably be a good time... Of course then again I am just guessing, so hopefully someone with more finch experience will pop in soon!

I tried hand raising a nest of wild finches that we disturbed the nest of last year (accidently while mowing the easement behind us). The first 2 siblings died within 2 days, but the third lasted just under 2 weeks. I got on the internet and it said they can be ready to leave the nest at about 3 weeks of age. But the finch I had would have been almost 3 weeks old when he/she died and it was no where near ready to fly. It's feathers were just comming through a pretty golden brown colour

From what I've read (cause my Zebras won't even go in their nest!) they'll leave the nest in another 15 days or so. They will still ask their parents to feed them for awhile and should be completely independent within another 5 weeks. Hope this helps!

I'm just worried, because the furthest I've ever got with chicks before (Bengalese/society), they had left the nest and had their adult plumage well on the way, and then BOTH chicks AND their father (who was my favourite finch) died on the same day...
Eee... Fingers crossed, I guess... |
