I am going to probably catch a lot of crap about what Im getting ready to post but here it goes.
I happen to love Petco. I think the store that I shop at is one of the nicest cleanest pet store I have ever been in. Shame on the employee who allowed the bird out of the cage not supervised and shame on the manager for not allowing the bird to see a vet for treatment. I think that if we were all looking for horror stories about pet stores there is at lot of pet stores that have them. Petco is also a great store that has adoption days on the weekends at very low cost.
You cant put down all Petcos because of one store.

Oh thats great to have an vwery low cost adoption day ..it gets people to buy a parrot because its cheap in other words very irrisposible people will be so called caring for this bird in all the wrong ways ..i have checked the net for horror stories in pet stores and the only ones that made me shudder wiht discust were petco stories ..i myslef work in a pet store and never have we had such problems ..if we suspect one of our birds is sick we sent it to the vet better safe than sorry but for a manger to tell an employee to just ''get rid'' of the bird is just plain sicking ..

No No They dont have adoption days for birds. I was just saying that Petco is good about having adoptions in general. They only adopt out Cats & dogs from shelters in our area.

I happen to agree with you as well CKD. I can't accuse an entire chain of stores, even if it is seems to be a large quantity of them that aren't up to standard. In my opinion, situations like these are best viewed on an individual basis.

By the way, I think PETA decided to end their boycott of PETCO because they agreed to stop sales of large birds. Not that I agree with PETA's policies but I think that agreement with pathetic... If you're going after a store for it's mistreatment of animals, I don't think the solution is to stop sales of larger birds...? That one just doesn't make quite sense to me!

Since you brought it up Sweetie, didn't you mention the Hy's in another branch of your store? I know their condition isn't sickly but it sure isn't up to standard for macaws that large. I remember seeing them some time ago... all they had in their cage was a concrete perch...

That story is from 3 years ago, hopefully Petco has learned to keep cages apart.

Petco struck a deal with PETA, and agreed to stop selling "large parrots", does anybody know what kinds of birds this includes? i.e. "how large is large?"

Here ya go Crebain, glad to see I'm not the only one who found that agreement strange! For some people, large could be a grey, others, it could be a hyacinth!!!

I think their large bird agreement has something to do with life span...

"Large birds are not necessarily appropriate for these individuals due to their long lifespan, size and care requirements"

Which to me is kinda hypocritical, because really lots of animals are not appropriate for certain individuals?

I have seen some Petcos that are a horrible mess, and under terrible management. For example, one I went to had dead fish on the floors and pet food on floors. It was all in all just a big mess.
However, the Petco closest to me, seems to take wonderful care of their store, and animals. The birds have clean cages and clean feathers. Cages are not too close to others. The birds seem very sweet, many have turned their heads down asking for a pet. The people at this store seem to know what they are doing. They also have a bird specialist, which I joke about and call a "BS." But the birds seem to be under very good care.
I do think it varies. I think these places(if they are going to sell birds)should be observed to see if that particular place is qualified.

That is a terrible story though. I am happy to hear Hobbit lived.

Methinks some big money also changed hands under the table, for PETA to "call off the dogs", no pun intended.

Still wondering what Petco considers "large", and finding it odd that Petco's extensive website has no press release (or anything else) that relates to PETA.

Angry

Yes indeed we do have two hycinths in our store chain and there were not mistreated just didnt get any toys till i came along now they are taken out 6 times a day and have plenty of toys and proper foods to keep em healthy ..the people in charcge of the bird department all got fired sad but had to be done ..now call me haertless if ive done so that they loose there job but parrots are more important than the humnas there parrots cannot ask or say what they desire humans can ..now there is a new managment and i being part of they will no longer be alone of chritmas or new years or any other days that are holidays they come home with me and we have grown a big bond together ..but yes i agree not all petcos are the same but if a shop owner desires to sell live animals he must take all the responsibliaties that come with including hireing resposible expierenced staff to care take for those certain animals ..within 3 weeks i managed to clean up that store and find homes for 2 of there 4 macaws one which is now living with my brother and the other my aunt . one is a B&G the other a scarlet both 6 years old and very tempermentl but my family is happy to have me to help them since im studing parrot phsycology ..I just wish people would understand my point of view on how some poeple are so irrisponsible as to put a scarlet macaws cage right over a senegals cage without proper dividers to help insure the saftey of there birds :eusa_wall
