Leg Band Removal

Any opinions on this? My conure has a leg band and I've noticed that my ekkie thinks this 'shiny silver thing' on his leg must be a TOY. I've been thinking about having it removed, but I'm not sure how stressful that is on them. Do the vets put the fid under? How do they take them off?

I am taking Lola in to get her's removed tonight at the Vet - I am not a fan of them at all

last thing I want happening is her getting a toe caught in it (it is rather big on her)

I also think it has a little bit to do with her leg plucking since it is constantly moving around on her leg.. she is always biting/picking at it

Could you please tell me how it goes? I don't think it's bothering Harvey, but Gypsy if always lunging at it, I'm more concerned with her going after the "shiny thing" and catching his poor leg in the process.

Chances are good they will cut it off.. My 'too had hers removed because it was too big for her- the vet was actually able to manipulate it off her foot...

Be sure to document the removal of the band, and have your vet make a note of it in your file. Ask for the band back and keep it some place safe- it's always good to have 'just in case' you need to prove your bird is not an import..

I had the breeder not put one on Morgan (CAG) and so she has never had one. I have read too much about accidents with them getting something caught and I choose to not have to worry about one more thing. Since I worry about anything.

Ramone had his band removed just a couple of weeks ago. My vet used big bolt cutters - and snap! - it was off. I have retained the band in my files. He is arthritic, and my vet thought it might be beneficial to just remove it to ease some of his discomfort.

He didn't seem all that bothered by the whole event.

I've never liked bands either. When I purchased Skye, I requested the breeder not put his band on him but to give it to me so I could keep it safe in case I ever needed it. Birds have enough problems with life itself without having to deal with those little bracelets that seem to be a bother anyway. They use a special tool to cut them off and it's not stressful.

Thanks all! I think I'm gonna go ahead and have it removed. They have to go in for a check-up and trims anyway, mine-as-well get it all done at once!
