Exclamation Important Email from Maggie Wright concerning laws to make it Illegal to own Parrots

Hello Everyone,

I’m sure many of you have received a copy through email of the letter that New York Bird Club Anna Dove has sent stating that their objective is to make it illegal to have pet birds in homes, PERIOD.

*The New York Bird Club rallies for a law to be passed that would ban
> the sale of birds being kept as pets in the USA, as birds are being kept
> in cages too small to fly in for the majority of their lives, which in
> some cases is close to 100 years. It also contributes to the import of
> illegal bird types. Keeping birds is unnecessary and cruel. At the very
> least that regulations be placed on cage sizes, number of birds per
> cage, or even licences to keep birds as pets. It seems to me to be far
> too easy for any one to buy a bird from a pet shop with no knowledge of
> bird welfare and no questions asked of that person about where the bird
> will be kept, etc. If we can at least get our government to debate this
> subject, I do hope that some positive actions may be brought forward. */

If you are an activist that is interested in establishing
avian legislation, I encourage you to write back with the goal of
banning the sale of birds or at the very least creating laws that will
protect caged and petshop birds from abuse and neglect….

These issues should be a concern to ALL of us Animal People. The last thing we need is to have the STATE come in and tell us what we can and cannot do with our birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and on. This is a constitutional rights issue that we must protect.

My new book has a very special chapter that talks about the differences between animal rights and animal welfare. It also walks the reader through WHY animal guardianship is a very bad idea for us pet owners and our precious companions. The more people that read it, the more people will have a more clear understanding of the issues. I believe that it may help some people who “think” they are for animal rights begin to understand the consequences of such actions.

Please let others know about it. It is written in a compassionate, rational (but NOT emotional) way that just may help some people begin to see the light.

I also recieved it yesterday and saw the link where the letter was sent to President Elect Obama to stop the sale of birds and not allow them as pets.
The new administration wishes for people to send in ideas for them to work on that people are intereseted in. This is what one certain group are making thier priority.

Wow what a ridicules thing for someone to try to pass. Just a thought has this person even considered what would happen to all the parrots that are pets right now. Should they be exterminated?? Some people just don't think things through do they?

Geez, that's a load of crap. I completely understand that somehow bird abuse should be prevented, but they need to realize that some birds, when under the right care, do actually live very happy lives.

housing birds is cruel!!!

but it's perfectly OK to inbreed dogs so that they now have siezures, skin problems, brittle bones, and hip dysplasia.

It's also OK to breed cats to the point that they are not even the same species as their wild ancestors, so they run around putting unnatural pressure on local wildlife, and when they become wild you've essentially created a NEW species.

You mess with MY birds, you're messing with ME.

Some silly person ("nice" for real words I would like to use) in need of a cause, and trying to sell a book. Get a life lady! I wonder if she has any pets? Hmm ... besides I think that Mr. Obama is gonna have enough on his plate to be worrying about besides such silly opinionated issues as this.

As well, did anyone see MSN news this A.M. The Porn industry is seeking a 5 Billion dollar federal bailout. You have got be kidding me... right? If our country answers this call, I AM MOVING!

In point everybody wants to be heard. If we were not Exotic Bird owners this saituation probably would just pass most of us by with little to no concern.

I do agree that there should be some regulations taken to ensure that proper care starts with the Breeders and Pet Shops. I do believe that there is an over-breeding issue in this country, which plays a huge part in the fact that there seems to be just as many rescue, foster and sanctuaries for exotic birds as there are Pet Stores and Breeders that profit off of the sale of them. Maybe owners should have to have a license, just as we do to have a dog or cat in certain cities. Do I think that anyone has the right to tell me that I cant keep my birds any longer... dare try it!

Just my opinion.

Sounds to me like someone just wants to sell a book. That said - it IS important to stay on top of what is happening in terms of legislation - remember Pennsylvania last year? They had a proposed law to ban Nanday conures. The local bird fanciers banded together and got it stopped.
