Indoor aviary?
Hello all.
Eventually when I build my dream house I would like to have a giant aviary in the middle of it, but this is a few years off... For now I have a brick bungalow with a finished basement. The basement is not a typical basement, no different then up stairs other then small windows, very dry and clean, raised floor with laminate flooring down. I have a room that is 40' x 14', only part of it is used. The other end of the room, 14' x 11 is open. I have been considering building a large indoor aviary for my Nanday and possibly other conures. I can picture it in my head on what needs to be done. I'm useful with building things as well. The frame of it should be pretty simple, not sure what I'd do for the flooring but that should be easy to sort out. The cage/mesh is what I'm wondering, any suggestions? I need to make sure its 100% bird safe as these are my babies. Not to concerned about the floor bit. more what I should use for the mesh/cage? |

We had a similar dilemma when building ours. We eventually found what we wanted at Lowes and tractor supply. It's called Galvanized Cage Wire. We bought it in 40ft section though. So far its been great. Tractor Supply Company - Cage Wire 30 x 10 ft 1/2 x 1 in

That's my dream too- an indoor aviary. Except mine would be a kind of large glass courtyard with cage/mesh on top, lots of trees, shrubs, native flowers, rock displays, a walking path with a seat and a pond with turtles in it. I sure can dream! I hope yours works out... I don't have any suggestions but I wish you luck on your planning and building.

Just a note on galvanized wire... it contains zinc which is toxic to birds. You can scrub the wire down with vinegar to try and remove the coating, however there's no guarantee you can scrub it clean. Once "clean" the wire is more likely to rust.
Many people use GAW (galvanized after welding) wire, however it still poses a danger. If you can afford it, you'd be best going with steel wire.
