Are your birds color phobic??
Hans HATES the color red. If you are wearing a red shirt and walk up to him he will most definately try to bite you. I have this red house coat that I love and some mornings I forget I'm wearing it when I go to say hi to him. He reminds me real quick of my transgression when he grabs my wrist (or finger) and bites instead of grabbing his precious walnut half. He's not like this any other time, just when I'm wearing red.
For the last few days he's been a little moody and I couldn't figure out why. Then last night it hit me. . . I put down a table cloth in front of his cage to catch any poop from when they are on the perch outside the cage and guess what color it is? RED of course! I was staring at it last night like "duh! come on Melissa!" For some reason his aversion to the color didn't even cross my mind when I put it down. I covered it up and sure enough, I've got my happy Hans back! Do you guys have any color phobic birds?

Ashling can't stand the blue broom- she freezes up, freaks, flaps, falls of her perch, screams and scrambles away from it. I don't know where on earth this came from but she's always hated blue brooms. Do you think we could fix these phobias?

I've been wondering that myself. I'm not sure if some of this with Hans is hormones or not. I'm going to give his old owner a call on the way home tonight and find out if he showed any aversion to the color red previously. I'm not sure with Hans if it's just a phase or what.

Red seems to be the popular 'freak out' color. I have a GCC that is scared to death of the red broom that I use in the bird room, so I have gotten to the point where I have to cover him to sweep in there.
I found out that my senegal isn't too fond of red either, I got a new red pea coat for Christmas and went to his cage one morning with it on and he jumped off his perch and was screaming hysterically. Now I know to stay away if I have on my new coat! I wonder what it is about the color red? |

I don't think Dave likes red either. I haven't noticed a color Bing avoids but he is neurotic enough that I am sure there is one.

Colours don't seem to bother my flock, they definitely have ones they prefer though. My grand father has a red-bellied parrot, hes not even a year old yet and HATES red as well.
I wonder what causes this. He was a hand raised baby, is it that something in his short life time that was red had upset or caused him some sort of grief? Or do they have some sort of natural predator that they associate this colour to? Maybe its the the millions of years of instinct built into them! |
