Question Beebee Parrot

A question here. I had a Beebee in the past and loved it It was a very small bird with the personality of a macaw! Does any one know if there are any being bred and where. I saw 2, same ad, in pet finder. The one was just like the one I had, she died after an injury. Th4e ad said they are very rare,, they used to be common enough. I may not get one now but would like a line on a breeder so /I can when time is right.
Please help

They used to be very common because they were imported. Now importation has stopped and there's hardly anyone who breeds them.

Try this website ---> Bird Breeder Search - BirdBreeders.com - Avian Directory of Available Birds and Bird Breeders
And search for "canary winged parakeet" another name they go by.

Some breeders that may be for sale
AvianBiotech.com - Find Birds for Sale
AvianBiotech.com - Find Birds for Sale

You might have better luck finding similar species such as the grey cheecked or golden winged brotos instead. We do have one member, Eliza, who has a golden winged!

Shady Pines Aviary, Caique Breeder - White bellied & Black headed Caiques - Brotogeris Parakeets - Shady Pines Aviary , specializes in Caiques and Brotogeris. They bred 5 different Brotogeris species. They are MAP certified. They do not sell Beebees, but might know someone who does.

Hobbit -- what kind of "beebee" did you have? Beebee became a nickname for quite a few brotogeris parakeets. Orange-chinned parakeets (aka Tovi parakeets), canary-winged parakeets (you'll often see them referred to as Canary-winged Bee Bee parakeets these days) and even the grey-cheeked parakeet (the original pocket parrot). It sounds to me like you had a canary-winged parakeet as you referred to a Petfinder ad I came across recently. They are WONDERFUL little parrots, aren't they? And you're in luck... they CAN be found, although not as easily as in the past.

Grey cheeks are basically impossible to find as hand-tamed pets. There are very few breeders working with them and most are trading amongst themselves to increase bloodlines.

There are a few breeders in the US working with other brotogeris parakeets. The canary-winged parakeets are easiest to find and orange-chinned parakeets can be found, too. From time to time you might find a golden-winged parakeet (like I did) or a cobalt-winged parakeet.

One of the best known aviaries for breeding brotogeris parakeets is Shady Pines in FL. WONDERFUL breeders and I highly recommend that you get in touch with her: Caique Breeder - White bellied & Black headed Caiques - Brotogeris Parakeets - Shady Pines Aviary She does breed and sell pet canary-winged parakeets :)

You may wish to visit the BrotoList on Yahoo groups: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Brotogeris/join

I knew about them being imported but had really hoped they were bred as well. If any have had one they'd know what I mean about them Thnx Monica

Good luck finding a grey-cheeked parakeet in the US. Very few were set up for breeding before the import ban in the early 90s. It's next to impossible to get your hands on a hand-raised, pet-quality baby these days. They just don't breed as readily as hoped.

Hobbit -- You had mentioned two "bee bees" for adoption on Petfinder -- they are canary-winged parakeets. They are the most readily available of the brotogeris parakeets. Breeders are having a lot of success with them. I have seen them for sale at birds-only pet stores and have even heard of them being available at pet stores, even Petco, from time to time. I don't think that you'll have difficulty locating one when the time is right :)

LOL! YUP! I remembered that you got Pickle!

For some reason I thought the grey cheeks were more common! Good to know! And best of luck, hobbit!

I would guess they go by both beebee n canary winges? The prob I have had is when looking up canary-winged n beebee I get different birds(in past) Over the summer I did have the chance to see n speak to one of the leading hookbill experts in the country n believe it or not he knew beebee parrot n discribed it just as i have known. He said they are native to Souh America n were widely imported( I am trying to reach him again actually) The Green one shown in pet finder is just what I had!
Then again I have seen green cheeks and others advertised n listed in books as beebees n they not even close to what I had! Thi is why I have asked here.
Eliza I have to say the bird I had was the BEST. Tiny but the personallity n bearing of a Macaw. In facted when I took my birds out, In car< it would calm or command the others. He had no problem walking up to my amazon n taling peanuts away. He was also the one that wouls ride the cats most of the time! Sit on head and walk around. I have been told in the past this is their personallity. I will loook up canary-winged again too
once again all thnx for the help. I'll keep looking as well.
Oh as to birds only pet stores. Recently went to columbus oh n had lot of time so hit pet stoes. used to be very good birds only store but not now. chain stores n mostly dog cat stuff!!!!!
