Live plants?
I saw a picture of a finch flight cage that had 2 live potted plants IN the cage. ...anyone heard of this? I searched the board & came up empty.
I know people have bird rooms w/ live plants in them... and aviarys with plants... but what about a cage? I really loved the look & wouldnt mind doing this for my tiel... but I thought it best to ask if it was in any way a danger to my fid. or would a bird just destroy the plant?

So long as the plant is bird safe, it's perfectly fine!
Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Parrots. Parrot cages. However, you also need to take into consideration the soil and if it contains anything harmful.

A few months ago they had an article in BirdTalk about just this thing.I bet if you find a back issue you could find the article. It talked of the various types of plants and why it wasnt a good idea to put them in a cage(something about pooping on and eating the plant) about how to arrange plants on the outside of the cage and lighting too.But its was a good article and might give you some ideas.
I bet some sturdier plants like Mother-in-law tongues or jade plants(dont know if they are poison or not) might work...What about a Spiderplant? |

I buy grass cafe from beak appitite. It's wheat grass that comes with a small container to grow it in. I put it in my finch and canary cage. They love it. I do have to take it out every couple of days and give it a couple more days to regrow. It grows fast and I've had mine for about a month now and it's still growing. It looks nice in the cage and if you cut it smells like fresh cut grass, which is nice here right now as we have at least a foot of snow on the ground and -15 c temps. LOL. Best of all it's healthy for your bird. Sue
