Personally I love Meyer's but I don't have one. I do have a bit of experience with them however. They can be intence little birds (not unlike parrotlets). They are very playfull and yes, I would say they can do fine in an appartment. That being said, I recently heard of someone who had to give up a pair of budgies due to neighbours complaining. They were very upset about it and drove for four hours to bring them to a rescue place I know of. I'd say go for it.

I think it was Savvy that recently purchased a Meyers and it eventually grew to hate her. She is totally clueless as to why, but it seems to have decided she's not her cup of tea. I think that many of the Poice's though wonderful, can reach this plateau. I've also heard the same about the Sennies. If you make them mad, they can be very unforgiving.
I do like them, however. I'm all for a bird that won't drive you out of your home with noise and is less destructive that many others. However, I wouldn't put ANY other species with a parrotlet. Way too unpredicable. THE OUTLAW

My Meyer's is very sweet to me, but wants little to do with my wife when I am around. She tolerates most men very well, but not women. She is very quiet for the most part, but will imitate other birds if given the chance. She is not very messy, noisy or destructive. She is usually content to sit on my shoulder or somewhere nearby.
By the way, her name is Elvis although a female. Most of my birds are rehomes I have taken in and the original Owners thought she was a male. I need to update my signature line as when we take in Gracie our CAG adoption next week, we will be up to 7 birds. I sincerely hope that will be all for now, but we have a hard time turning down the feathered homeless. |

I've only had one experience with a Meyer's. When we visited the rescue where we adopted D and Seymour, the first bird that we were introduced to was a little Meyer's. He was handed to Ricky first, and he just fawned all over Ricky,(I don't know why birds do that with my hubby, but they do). The lady brought the 2nd bird out to us, and Ricky casually handed the Meyer's over to me.(Big mistake, as birds seem to see me as the ultimate chew toy) The Meyer's was offended that Ricky had changed up to handle the next bird and lit into me with a vengence. LOL I tried so hard not to make a reaction(I was trying to make a good impression with the rescue folks) and did the hand bobble to try to get the Jaws of Steel to let go. It didn't work. I finally had to be "rescued" by the rescue folks. Needed bandaids and a cold wet paper towel. It wasn't the bird's fault. It was Hubby's! Anyway, those little birds can pack a mean bite, so be prepared and try not to piss them off! I hope you have (and you probably will) a much better experience than I did.

I just got a Meyers last week. Sidney is wonderful and so far he is great with the both of us. My girlfriend and i have been doing research for weeks (after we reallized that we shouldnt take on a Cockatoo in our apartment). We found that the Meyers are one of the quietest and easily tamable birds out there. Sidney has had his moments where he will scream when we leave the room. We are working on positive reinforcement now and not feeding into his tantrums. He is only three months old and we figured if we nip in in the bud now, it will not become a problem later. I am crazy..we just got this bird last week and i am already thinking about getting him a playmate. I may just come home with one without telling my girlfriend.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN ADOPT ANOTHER MEYERS OR ANOTHER BIRD THAT WILL BE COMPATABLE WITH A MEYERS IN THE NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY AREA... thank you and good luck with all your babies |

There's a real cute Senegal parrot that I know of... right around Sidney's age... 8^)
Glad to hear Sidney is doing well. But what's up with the screaming? Is he eating okay?
