Question Question about training my lovebird

Hi every one I am new to this, but have a question regarding my lovebird, Hanna. I got her the day after Valentines day and when I brought her home she moved right in. I have had her 5 days today. My question is how do I go about training her? Every time I put my hand in the cage to grab her she lets out this very upsetting scream and I feel bad for having to do so, but I am still training her to come on my finger. I don't want to over-whelm her so I have been holding back. When ever I do put my hand in her cage to change her food and water she is silent and will just observe me. She has no problem coming out of her cage when the door is open she crawls all over it and she is even talking back to me. When ever I leave the room she starts to call for me and that was on the third day of having her. She is all of 4 months so how can I go along having her come on my finger? As being I don't like grabbing her and she doesn't as well? Thanks

Was your lovebird hand-raised and socialized before you brought her home?

I would definitely refrain from grabbing your new lovebird from the cage. That can be stressful and traumatic for the lovie. For now, reward her (him?) with praise and perhaps a favorite treat (a clump from a sprig of millet, a piece of a sunflower seed, etc.). One you get the lovie out of the cage, you can work on getting her to step up onto your hand OR a hand-held perch.

Here are some link to a series of articles that might be of interest:

Hand Taming Your Lovebird - Birds

The most important thing to remember is be patient. It can take quite a bit of time to tame and socialize any species of parrot.

If you haven’t done so already, you may wish to get your hands on a copy of Vera Appleyard’s book, The Lovebird Handbook. It’s a great resource for pet lovebird owners. She also has a pretty informative website: parrotparrot.com.

Best of luck!

Yeah she was hand raised. I have been doing all that you list. Today she jumped out of her cage because I left the room and when I called her she ran into my hand. So, I guess we are making some progress, lol. Thanks for your input I will look into the link you have listed and the book.:)
