Should I be worried??

Hi everyone,

After doing much research on Indian Ringnecks, I decided to look for one to purchase. I contacted a breeder in California, who had a baby, that will be weaned in about a week and a half. We had constant contact up until I sent the deposit.. which was on the evening of May 11th. I sent it through Pay Pal. I had given him all my shipping information and he said I needed to send the deposit, so he could get the flight and then could give me the info. I haven't heard from the breeder since, and it has been 3 days. I know that bird breeders can be very busy, just like I can get with my sugar gliders, but I can't help but feel alarmed just a bit. Or maybe he went on vacation, I hope!

I know that with Pay Pal, I can get my money back if I contact them within 30 days of sending the deposit. Should I wait another few days or so and see what happens?

I know no one will have a definite answer, but a little re-insurance, advice, anything, would be great

I agree, wait a couple of more days, and try to contact him during this time. If he never answers, something could be wrong.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I filed a complaint with pay pal this evening... I know that it can take them a while to get through everything... but honestly, $100 is just way too much to risk on someone who can't even write back. The breeder knew I was sending the deposit, I told the breeder I was sending it, you would think that if it was legit, hed be looking for it and tell me when he got it... :aiwebs_01

I wanted to wait a few days before filing a complaint... but then I realized, I only sent a deposit... why would I want to do business with someone this inconsiderate? What if I never get the bird after full payment?? Just too much to worry about

I think you did the right thing, I have dealt with many breeders and never had that kind of problem.

May I suggest that you look closer to home? At least within a reasonable driving distance? I am not a fan of shipping birds, I have only had one shipped to me, a Jenday hen this spring and she was so stressed, I decided I would never do it again. I have driven all the way to Florida to avoid it before and since.

Additionally you would be getting a weaned bird you have never interacted with and have no way of assessing its health before you receive it. What would you do if you and the bird simply didn't like one another?

This has nothing to do with this topic, but dyeman I wanted to ask if an eclectus diet is costly to upkeep, since 75% of their diet would be raw food.

Scott,

I did exactly that... I have been searching for a bird that I can pick up. As much as I want a ringneck, there aren't any available in the area at the moment... there are 2 blue's, but for $400 from a pet store... that is just too pricey for me.

I have been in contact with someone from southern NJ, with a green cheek conure that a family backed out on. It was finished weaning 3 weeks ago, so she wants to find a home for it soon. So, she is asking $175 for the bird, just so it goes home fast, so that it can bond to us instead of her lol. It is a 3 hour drive one way, but worth it I think!

I was trying to stay away from conures... Because everyone says they are very very loud (I have experienced very loud conures too, working at a pet store). But I know every conure can be different... plus, I am looking for a loving cuddly bird, I think this little green cheek would be perfect for me

I'm not dyeman, but I can attest to the diet of Eclectus parrots. I don't think feeding fresh is anymore expensive than feeding pellets. In fact, Ekkies shouldn't be fed pellets at all. If you cook healthy meals for yourself, you'll find that with a few alterations, you can simply add a little more and feed your parrot too. I usually have enough leftovers from any meal to feed most of my flock. I actually pretty much feed the approved Ekkie diet to all of my birds with a few modifications. Feed fresh and reap the rewards of a shiny, happy bird.

My Shamrock is not too loud...I was told the smaller conures are not as loud as the larger ones (ie the Nandays). However, thay are not very cuddly. Shamrock is more independent. He only wants to be held when he wants it and otherwise he is EVERYWHERE! He loves his neck scratched and a head rub but never for very long at any one given time. They do have WONDERFUL personality though and will keep you entertained! I love both my fids for who they are but Bosco (my TAG) is definitely the Love Bug.
Best of luck finding the fid that is looking for you!
