This thread is a matter of opinion. Does trading, buying and selling go on, of course - thats not the question. The topic is how we felt about trading specifically. I think its crappy.

So, so far the numbers are 4 people think its crappy and only 2 don't, theres your reality check LOL

What you consider a reality check I see as jumping on the bandwagon.

I agree with Lori too if we're taking votes. Maybe I see money as something you trade for a product though. I was looking to rehome my very active working line dog recently (due to my MS he just can't get the exercise he needs anymore) and would have absolutely traded him (and he's worth a good 3k) for a 300 dollar unwanted bird. I like the barter system it is convenient and we'll see a lot of it more in these recession times.

Honestly (to me), the method of rehoming your pet doesn't matter so much as the intentions. As long as your pets happiness takes priority in the process and NOT what you stand to gain then whichever route you take isn't as important. Now if blindly you'll take anyones money as long as its the amount you are asking for then thats no better to me then trading blindly to whoever offers the item you're trading for. Both can IMO be done a wrong way, or CAN be done a right way. Across the board though (not always but in general), I think they are all done without the animals interests in mind and I think thats sad.

I got Kiwi because the previous owner traded his Flatbed pick up because he thought he wanted a bird again, only to find out that he didn't have the time he needed. I gave him 300.00 for bird and cage and Kiwi is better for it. It served us both well. I know Kiwi is in a forever home as long as I am alive and the man recouped some of his money. I don't think that it is a bad system like Lori said as long as we are not trading for drugs and what not. What is more upsetting to see people buying or trading dogs and animals used for fighting. They are using their animals for profit but in a way that will do nothing but hurt the animals free spiriit and physical health. All are animals were paid for and it is the american way. Everything has a cost and all we can concern ourselves with is how WE treat what we have! We can only stop by reporting what we know is wrong and not to assume that this person does not have good intentions. I agree with Lori here, maybe it is truely that this person does not have the time or resources to care for a bird and that a dog may be a better fit.

Just my 2 cents

I question most people who sell parrots on craigslist just because their listings are so stupid. With that said, i see nothing MORE wrong with trading. it's the exact same thing, only cutting out the money. i mean, the person is just going to buy a chi anyways right?

I actually got my half moon conure on craigslist. Of course, when i went to meet him i instantly found out that he was not a green cheek like they told me he was. be careful who you're dealing with. also, before you pass any judgments on the seller's character, meet the bird. they may be perfect for you. if that's the case, who cares what the cash or trade value is?

Trading

The barter system of trading has been around for hundreds of years. Give me your daughter and I give you 15 cows!! yeah thats dowry not barter I know, but people have been trading goods between themselves for a long time, its a good system. Theyve chosen to sell the bird in order to get the money to buy a chihuaha, their choice at the end of the day. The end result is going to be the same either way the bird is rehomed and they have a new dog whether they got it from a trade or from the cash they received for selling the bird. Not every household holds the same values toward their animals as the people on this board do. My heart breaks when I see ads at work for people wanting to rehome their dog that they have had for 10 years because their new landlord wont allow pets! That poor animal has been with that family for all of its long life and they can just toss it to the side. Thats a crock of crap to me, dont move into the house! Keep looking until you find one that is pet friendly. Thats how I would do it and have been doing it for 20 years. Id rather live in my car until the right place turned up rather than live without my dogs. Not everyone thinks of their birds, dogs cats etc as part of their family. To some people it is just a bartering system. Just wait till the chihuaha grows up and aint so cute anymore, wonder what they will swap it for next?? A playstation??

Lori my response was not aimed at you, I think we posted at the same time. To clarify my problem with the trade is they are gonna let any joe blow that comes along with what they want in trade to take that bird. How about ya put the birds well being first and try to find him/her a suitable home. That is my issue with it. I am pretty sure we can all have a different opinion, that is sort of how the world goes.
