frustrating CL listing...

Craigslist is frustrating. I've known about it for the longest, but never spent much time on there. Lately I've been checking the pet ads a lot. Today I found an ad for a red-lored Amazon that the person would like to trade for a chihuahua or sell for $300. I was going to respond with a lower offer to take the bird, but I don't want to give this person ANY money! I don't know exactly why they're getting rid of it, but considering that they want a puppy it can't be because they can't have pets or that they don't have enough money. I know that birds are more expensive, more time consuming, and can be more troublesome than dogs, but this just frustrates me. It's not my bird, but I feel like urgh I don't want the bird to just go to someone who's willing to trade a chihuahua! Then again, I also don't wanna give this person $300!

Thanks for listening!

Hmmm, I dont understand what is so frustrating to people about this kind of thing. I know many people who are better suited to owning a dog than a bird and many who got a bird and realized it wasnt for them. Now what is the difference of paying someone cash for a bird or paying them with a trade? If I had Chi puppies to sell and kept birds as I do now I might just consider. Im mean look at it this way. I had a horse that wasnt getting used due to many reasons. Rather than letting his talent get wasted to standing around getting fat - I traded him for a pony that our grandaughter can ride. Now the horse is beginning his new life doing what he was trained to do and the pony they no longer had anyone for is going to get busy making some kids happy. What is the differance? I traded Breeding Parrotlet Pairs for my Willow. I no longer wanted to care for all those pairs to not raise babies anymore but someone in another state where there are less parrotlets did. She has more than gotten her money back, the birds are well cared for and are still together and Willow has a wonderful home with my flock as my pet. Why is this so wrong????? The person is going to sell the bird anyway and then go buy a Chi puppy anyway....whats the difference???
All that matters is not how its paid for but the home you let it go to regardless of the trade.

I don't like it either. Treating animals like commodities or property. Now if there is still some type of screening process to go along with the trade and in the end your best interest lie in the home the bird ends up in rather then your new chihuahua or whatever you've "traded" it for (like a car) then I suppose it makes me feel better about it but in general I think the person trading out their current pet might be more interested in what they stood to gain as opposed to where their "property" ended up or its feelings about losing its current home or whether it would remain where it were going .

You think the pet stores are out there to just find good homes for the pets we buy??? You think breeders are out there breeding to not make money????? We all have pets that came from somebody out to make a buck or we would not have them. So maybe you rescued your bird? Good. He still made someone a buck at one time and if it werent for that you wouldnt have him. It is a rare breeder who breeds anything just for the hobby of doing it. heck many of our pets happen as a result of traded pairs. I see no difference in currency as long as both parties are humane and care for the animals. Now if some one is breeding animals to USE as currency that is much different. Such as in exotics for drugs.

Well Lori, this particular topic is about trading. I realize that you're all for trading and/or using your animals like currency, but I don't have to agree with it or like it, none of us does. I happen to think they deserve better than that.
