Broken blood feather

Stella had a bad blood feather breakage this evening! She was out on a friend of mine's shoulder (we were playing poker and he had concluded that she was his good luck charm) and when I went to put her back in her cage, she kept doing back flips out of my hand and onto the carpet...she may have not wanted to go back in her cage, who knows, but all of a sudden she flaps her wings and I feel something wet splash onto my face and then I see blood on my hand! I was so frantic cause I thought I could tell which feather it was but I didn't want to be pulling the wrong one so my boyfriend helped me towel Stella and we brought her into the bathroom and took the tweezers and after getting a closer look and making sure that I was tweezing the right feather, I pulled it! Whew!!! What a rush of adrenaline! I was so scared! She has broken one before, but for some reason it did not bleed nearly as much as this one...so now this is the second one she has had, but this one was way more scary! So after we got it, we gave her a little rinse off in the sink to get the blood off the rest of her as well as us and every thing looked good! She is happily asleep in her cage now! What a night!

The sight of blood can be pretty unnerving. You did the right thing by having the bird toweled and having one person hold the bird and the other pull the feather. Things like that should always be done with two people.

I applaud you. I'm still learning to cut Beatrix's nails and am still not used to the blood.

I'm pretty sure you should not see blood when trimming nails. I think that means you're cutting them too short.

I agree. Try to trim just the very tip. If the nails are too long, as opposed to just sharp, do frequent trims so the quick (vein) gets a chance to recede.
