I don't know. We buy seeds that are just for soaking. No vitamin additives etc... I don't even know if it is safe to sprout seeds that have been fortified/enriched. I know vitamin drops in water goes bad in a few hours... so I'm just not sure.

What about the volkman seed? If I picked out just a handful of seeds -could i sprout them?

My pet stores do NOT sell sprout mixes and afik we have no health food stores.

Plain birdseed is fine for sprouting. I've never heard anyone talk about fortified seed so I don't know for sure, but I would guess that it's OK to use because people would be talking about it if it caused problems.

I've bought 3 so called "not so great" bird foods thus far... and.... I read here that if the seed wont sprout its dead & will do nothing for the bird.

Just to see if the seeds were any good or not (did not feed fid), I sprouted them.

-Hartz cockatiel blend (bought at petco, a new cockatiel mix that seemed promising because it had very few sunflower seeds, but has ethoxyquin... found out that was bad after I opened it & will not buy again.)

-Encore blend (seemed funky to me cuz of the artificial color all over all of it, just the teaspoon of seed I pulled out made the water look like koolaid. Some of the sunflower seeds were almost blue.) Now I feed this to the wild birds... whole bag of trash IMO.

-Kaytee blend, this is what they said my fid ate at the petstore (they were kinda right, she was actually on a different Kaytee blend though..) Dyes again, koolaid sprouting water!

ALL 3 OF THEM sprouted just fine.... kinda shocked me. Again, I did NOT feed them to Holly because I wasn't sure of the safety.

I wish this question had a solid answer! I've seen many posts where people say its "fine to sprout your regular seed"..... but does that include the mixes.

NO stores around me sell plain seed... it ALL has some kind of extra something mixed in. I ordered Volkman seed because of the recommendations here... but again, it has "other" stuff in it. hmmmm....

sorry op. I'm no help at all.

You may want to look for a more traditional feed & grain store. You can buy in bulk there. You can also buy in bulk at grocery stores like Whole foods.

The reason the seeds are fortied ar because vitamins do not hold up in water. They are added dry to a dry seed mix. So when you rinse, the additives go with it. I wouldn't be to concerned about it. IMHO

great thank you. i did place some in a container to sprout just to c if htey would sprout and suprisingly in 24 hours they did. pretty fast in my opnion. aslo i will be rinsing them quit a lot so if the water gets rid of the vitamins there should be no problem with that.

If you are still looking for a sprouting mix, I picked mine up at an Organic store. It was sold as Organic Sprouting Mix. It contains 5 different seeds and legumes and absolutely no pesticides or fertalizers. But a little goes a long way!! I sprouted 1 tbsp of it and ended up with over a cup of sprouts!!

Can you get plain parakeet mix? Meaning millet, canary seed, and oats. Most stores seem to have that, even if they don't have any other kind of plain-seed mix. Cockatiels will eat it just fine. Many stores sell packages of a single type of seeds (like sunflower or safflower), and if you can get those you can mix them with the keet seed to get something similar to a cockatiel mix.
