Oy still confused?

okay so a little back i asked about Petries coloring and i was that he maybe a Normal Grey cockatiel split to pied but was uncertain because the pictures were not too clear so i decided to take some new pictures and these are alot better. so just to be 100% sure what color mutation do you think petrie is. Ill also add a Poll so you dont have to waste to much time on this post. but feel free to comment if you'd like.

Well, we have a female normal grey split to pied and she is A LOT darker than your Petrie. Our male grey is very light similar to yours but we were thinking he was a cinnamon/pied.

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, you cannot know exactly what your bird is split to unless you know what mutations the parents were or are split for, or if you breed him to a female with the splits known. Because pied is a recessive gene, you are more likely to have a female split to it, than a male because males need both the x and y genes to be affected for it to be split. Cinnamon is a sex-linked gene, so unless one or both of his parents were cinnamon, Petrie is not split to it. You most likely have a normal colored male. This website might help a bit:
Cockatiel Genetics
Like I said, I have no experience with this at all, this is just what I read online. :)

You can tell some that are split to pied because they have patches of color on the back of their heads. I know this for a fact because our female split just had pied babies even though we were not sure if the male was or not so I'm guessing they both are. ;)

He's definitely split pied because as Amanda said the little white patch. That's a good indicator for split pied. I'm still going grey split though. The w/f are so much more obvious with the cinnamon.

You make it sound as if pied is a sex-linked gene! Pied is very similar as whiteface is, therefore if you have two normal cockatiels, and one is split for pied or whiteface or any other recessive mutation, all offspring will have a 50% chance of being split. It does not matter which parent is split.

Males and females need 2 pied [or whiteface] genes in order to be visual, one to be split.

With cinnamon, females only need one gene (as it's only carried on the X chromosomes) and males need two to be visual.

Gotta remember, in birds, males are X,X [Z,Z] and females are X,Y [Z, W]!!!!
