What sparked your love of birds?
Sorry if this thread has been done before, but, just wondering--What sparked your love for birds? For me, it was that I grew up around them and have looked at them as intelligent, fun, cute little animal friends. They're fun to hang with. I remember when I used to have my cockatiel Cedric, I was in about 3rd or 4th grade and whenever I'd do homework, he'd come and walk all over my paper, back and forth, and start trying to nibble at it, or he'd come and land on my head when I'd be talking to someone.

When I was young my sister had a parakeet , she never really played with it and I was never allowed to take it out of the cage but I would sit for hours and watch it. I wanted one soo bad . when I grew up I had the twins young and worked all the time so did not have time to give a bird the attention that it would need . Now Im finally grown up kids getting ready to leave home , have my own home and 4 wonderful birds !!!!!!!!!! Took forever to get here : )

I had finches as a kid and my grandma had a little blue budgie for a long time when I was child. I would love to go to her house and help her take care of him and watch him.
Now, as an adult I of course love and work with all kinds of animals. I love learning about all the different species, their care, and behavior. When I got my first cockatiel, I was hooked. Now I think I'm obsessed. :)

I'm pretty new at this, having only had my birdie for about 2 months but when I got Pixel something clicked.
One of my co-workers had a lovebird fly onto her balcony this fall and asked if I wanted it since she had a budgie and they did not get along. I thought it might be fun but I never thought my boyfriend would go for it, and I was right. He didn't. That lovebird has a wonderful home now with my co-workers friends. After that I had been thinking about birds from time to time, even doing some research on the internet on what kind of bird I would actually want. I was looking at a friend's facebook profile and there were pictures of her playing with a lovebird. I showed the pics to my boyfriend and his response was "Cute! Do you want one?" I got very excited and of course I wanted one! I spent that whole night looking at pictures and reading up on lovebirds, budgies and cockatiels to try to decide what I wanted, I even watched videos to get a feeling of their noise level. I ended up choosing to get a lovebird mostly because of their looks and also because they're not as common as budgies and tiels where I live. And when your heart decides something there's no way you can change that! The next day I started to check on availability in my area, there was a waiting list for babies but I could get an older one from a petshop. I decided to check on this little shop that also breeds a couple of types of birds and handfeeds the babies and has a really good reputation. I checked on they're website that night and there was a 1 year old blue black masked lovebird for sale because of the owner's allergies. I got so excited and the next day we went there to have a look. And there he sat, alone in his cage, the most beautiful face I had ever seen, and I knew right there that he was mine!! I later found out that he had only been for sale for one day. So the same day the previous owner decided it was time to let her baby go I was deciding to get one!

I just always have liked birds. Birds in general have always been my favorite "animals."
When I was a kid I had a parakeet (budgie) for a while. And for years I had chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and sundry other varieties of outdoor fowl.... It's been several years now since I had the last of those. Finally got a hankering to get back into some hands-on birds again though the end of last year and got my GC conure and a little while later my sun conure. I said I'm gonna be the weird old man with 40 birds one of these days. :) |
