Avocado

Avocado is one of my favorite food, and I was wondering if the smell of it would harm my lovie?

The smell won't harm him, but please don't give him any. There is some controversy about if it is safe for birds. Most lists and vets will say absolutely no, but some bird people say it is ok. The problem is that toxins from the pit may leach into the flesh and harm your bird. It is one of those things where, why take the chance?

I love avacado as well and the smell has not seemed to harm the birds I've owned. According to what I've read it is one of the fatty acids in avacado that, when eaten, *can* (not will) cause breathing problems in birds. There are certainly a large number of cases of birds being fed avacado and having no issues - but that doesn't mean they won't in the long run. Frankly I just don't chance it...

The main issue I have is that if I have avacado in my salad at supper I had an uninvited guest fly over and attempt to steal my salad...

Thanks for the input :) I'll definitely keep my bird in his cage whenever I have avocado around. I was just wondering if the smell could cause problems. Thanks so much!
