I have an Indian Ringneck, I am not her original owner so I dont know exactly how old she is, her band has 1994 on it though so i assume she is around 15y/o. I've had her for ten years.
She has a cage but she is never locked inside and she doesn't have clipped wings. I deal with the damage that can cause from time to time and she's a smart girl, she flies to her perch to poop or perches on a pipe that runs along my very high ceiling, so its easy to have poop catchers in the right places. Anyways, always around this time of year, i will wake up with her on my pillow nuzzling and clucking at me, and she will try to get under the sheets to pick around in there and clip my fingernails, etc. Also she will try to feed my ears. I know this is her trying to be natural in such an unnatural situation and that she thinks of me as her husband and wants to have babies. (She's only laid eggs once in the ten years I have had her). Anyways, this part is easy to deal with because, well its nice to feel loved even by an animal. But it brings such tremendous guilt on me. I feel like I have robbed her of what she feels is the entire point of her existence. It makes me very sad thinking about what I've done to her. Anyways in a few months, this behavior will change, soon i wont be able to walk around without being dive bombed and bitten as hard as she can. This I think is because now she is very frustrated that her courtship has not gone as planned and I am now seen as the reason no other suitable mates are appearing. So she wants to drive me away by being as MEAN as a bird can possibly be (yet strangely i can still go right up to her and pet her without being bitten, its just when im up walking around that she attacks) anyways this is a weird question but can birds be inseminated. I dont want to get her a mate. Nor do I want her to have a bunch of chicks. I just want her to be able to have ONE chick hatch and raise it. Just one. I want to give her what shes wanted more than anything the whole time i've known her. She will be with me until she is gone, i would never get rid of her no matter how awful she can be sometimes. thanks for reading

Artificial insemination with birds is possible, and is performed on raptors quite often.
Peregrine Falcon: Stories of the ... - Google Book Search Breeding Never heard of it being performed on parrots, however.

Maybe just no one has thought of it before. I got a Lorie female that I think would make a wonderful mother but i'm too worried about losing her as my friend to try a mate for her. Definatly food for thought maybe you could be one of the first.

Doing this to birds is not uncommon. I've seen them do it to turkeys before as well as chickens and i pretty sure that parrots arent much different. the only problem i see is that she will not take care of the egg and chick. Theres no male so she will still lay an egg but in her mind its infertile and after around 15 days she will abandon the egg and the chick inside. So if you wanted her to be a mother that is possible but probly expensive but you'd have to hatch the egg and take care of the little one. I hope i helped.

My Husband so wants my red Lorie and his Sun to breed. I told him it wouldn't work and then he found ton's of stuff about even cross continent hybreds. You never know what nature is capable of.
cockatiel92 you are correct which means incubating equipment, hand feeding etc. |
