Exclamation ok its not birds, but i still need advice please.

Ok,
So I have a friend, whose mother has cats, more than 30 of them. The problem is, she doens't get them spayed or neutered. Which i don't think all cats and dogs need to be spayed or neutered unless of course it is out of control like this situation. Anyways, her cats are always pregnant, and they are inbreeding and urinating and deficating all over the house.
You can smell the house when you walk by.
And she won't find homes for any of the kittens until they are adults, which is when she doesn't want them because they arent as cute anymore.

I have tried offereing a free get your pet spayed/neutered voucher. But she doesn't accept it. and I am not the only one. Many people have tried to help.

And I wouldn't have a problem with this, if only there weren't shelters that pick up these animals and either euthanize them, or keep them in a tiny little cage until a home is found for them, which is becoming more and more rare.

So what should I do?
I really feel like I should make a report about this, but at the same time, they are my friends, and I would feel terrible if they took all of her cats away.

My dog, Normie, came from a situation like that. The dogs were in horrible shape when someone finally turned them in to authorities. Normie was one of the puppies. I didn't know until after I adopted him that there were 40 or 50 adults also. because of the years of inbreeding he has seizures, little bladder control, and other issues. I love him. He's my favorite dog I've ever had but the condition of the dogs was awful. The females all had bad bleeding from their uterus. None of the dogs were used to humans. The people at the humane society couldn't even tell which of the females were the mothers of the 18 puppies. Normie hated people when he was a baby. He didn't know he could hear until he was four months old. I got him when he was about 8 weeks. He didn't wag his tail until after he realized he could hear. He was something else. He still is. His nickname was psycho puppy hence the name Norm.
I don't know what to tell you to do other than to follow your gut instinct and your heart. If the situation is detrimental to the welfare of the animals, then you know what you should do. Hopefully, r2rusmc and others will be by to offer some advice.

If you can smell the odor outside the house, just imagine how bad the ammonia (from urine on the floor) is damaging the cats' lungs. Their noses are virtually down there in it. Poor things. I'd definitely report it. The owner may be responsible for the deaths or illnesses of hundreds of cats if no one intervenes. All that ammonia will no doubt have an impact on the owner's health as well. She is a hoarder and needs professional mental health care.

I've been debating how to answer this. Maybe try finding articles about other situations like this and show her how bad off it is for the Cats. Sounds like she is a "collector" and its very hard to get them to stop. Most of the time collectors have some Phsycological problems they can be very minor or really big ones. I'm sure she thinks she's in the right but it does sound like neglect. Good luck and follow your guts. Keep trying to get her to at least spayed/neutered some of them. Also this is very unhealthy for her cat feces can cause lots of health problems.

I would report it.
My mother has many cats on her farm. All were kittens that people just threw out of their cars along the farm road she lives on. She keeps them clean, has them neutered/spayed, and has had each one to the vet many times. I still call her the crazy cat lady, but that is just for fun. There is a thin line between saving animals and letting it get out of control. From what you said, it is out of control. This person is either a TRUE horder or is in way over her head and doesn't want to admit it. Either way an intervention is needed to make sure the cats are ok.

well i just made an anonymous report. They said there is no law about having to spay/neuter your cats and they said i could trap them if i wanted.
But when I told him there were more than 30 cats he said they would go talk to her.
Its really sad because where I am living right now, the authorities arent used to having to deal with many animal neglect situations. When i lived in the city, if this was happening they would be on that like flies on poo.
well maybe something will be done. Its just so frustrating because it is my friends mom.

Also I am looking for a kitten for a friend of mine, but i dont want to have one of theirs, simply because I feel that it will just add to her thinking it is ok. you sorta see what I am saying?

I don't mean to sound cruel but it sounds like your friend's mom has some issues that need to be addressed. Having *that* many pets (regardless of the species), living in squalor, not looking out for their well-being (allowing them to breed freely, not spay/neutering) and giving up adult pets in favor of babies all point to hoarding, which is usually a symptom of mental illness.

You're doing the right thing by reporting here and quite honestly, I think that you should continue to do so until action is taken. The animals in her care deserve better and quite frankly, so does she.

I'm wishing you all the best!

I would keep trying. Maybe you could contact a nearby animal rescue (not a shelter, but another non-profit group who may have some contacts) that could lead you in the right direction or help you out with this. I find that these groups are usually more attentive to these types of situations that the good ole' animal control officers.

You are doing a good thing for these animals and your friends. If you can smell it outside, just imagine what it's doing to the folks living inside, including the cats. Unfortunately with people like this, sometimes even leaving one cat behind is not an option. She may even know shes in over her head, but she feels trapped. Having the animals taken, cleaned up, and hopefully adopted out to good homes may be a blessing for everyone involved.

I think your doing the right thing by reporting her. She obviously has a problem and is not willing to face that. I'm just glad my collecting freak of a mother-in-law hates cats.

A friend of mine got a female cat last summer I think and the cat is all grown up now (still a very young grown up) and my friend got so excited the other day because she thought her cat was pregnant. I got so mad at her for being so irresponsible (and because she was so excited) I couldn't even look her in the eye. So I can't imagine how you must be feeling.
