I have to ask you for some advice. I'm having serius problems with my lovebirds pooping! The thing is that every single time she lands on me or my bf she poops on us. And I mean EVERY TIME. I've tried timing her after she poops and taking her to her cage about 10 minutes after to try to get her to do her stuff there but it's not working! She just prefers to go on us.
I don't mind that much unless she goes in my hair but my boyfriend is going nuts I'm starting to worry that he'll want me to get rid of her since he's not so into birds as i am and I live at his placeAny advice greatly appreciated |

Oh - and my bird doesn't like to go poop in her cage. She doesn't spend much time in the cage and (in my opinion anyway) she thinks of it as "home." And who wants to poop in their home? So I have a few perches set-up outside the cage (with a food bowl and water - so she knows it is for her). She poops at these perches (mostly)...

We got Pepper at seven and "poops happen" with him. Wawa is trained to go on a shower perch we have set up in the tub. We don't use food bribes, that can become a nightmare in itself, just repetition, timing and the "yeah good boy" cheer.
For Pepper, the minute I walk in the door I take of my work clothes and put on one of my many "poop" shirts. He will go poop on the perch, he even says go poop (when he already has), however, he does not show the same body language that Wawa does when he has to poop. All of a sudden, Wawa will squirm and struggle to get away from you, and you know he has to go. Pepper just goes, then does a Zorro type tail swish after the fact. LOL If training isn't possible, would the BF compromise with poop shirts?

Parrots poop it is what they do. lol If I don't have poop on me it means I am not spending enough time with my parrots.
I never much liked the idea of training a parrot to poop when told. I have heard stories of birds that were trained to do so and it causing problems with pooping on their own. One lady had to call the house from work ever half hour to tell the bird with her answering machine to poop. But I have also heard of people training this with success to.

I don't believe that training a parrot to poop in an appropriate place by utilizing a reward is "bribing." The parrot is simply using the association of the reward to know that it is involved in a behaviour that the trainer feels is a "good" behaviour. If the trainer and the parrot have a good relationship this training method is extremely effective - if the trainer and the parrot do not have a good relationship then any reward is treated with suspicion by the parrot - and the training sessions have a poor result. |
