Would he?????????

We have recently moved. We spend a lot of time outside in the back yard and on the lanai. Our fid spends just as much time on the lanai as we do. There are several Osprey that stalk the air space above our house and yard. They are so beautiful. Anyway...one of them lands on our fence and flips his wings while he looks at our female eclectus. Do you think he wants to eat her? Do you think he would try and get her through the screen?

It is possible. He would see her as prey and with her bright colors she would be easy game.

Eww......She hangs out under the covering. He knows she is there and she knows he is there. She freaks when he lands on the fence, she screams at him then he flies away. He has never tried to get any closer, he always lands in same area as far away from the screen as he can get and still be on the fence. She is never unsupervised, if I go in (even for a second) she comes with me. Should I discourage playing on the lanai?

It sounds like the loud unfamiliar voice is scaring him. If she is supervised I guess it is alright. Osprey are known for speed. Just be careful. Is it screened in?

Between you scaring it, the screen and your being so cautious you should be fine.

Not sure where you live but do you have crow and/or raven around?

If so then feeding them is your best bet of keep larger prey birds out of your yard.

An Osprey's kill speed is really a non-factor in this situation.
((Their claim to speed fame is that signature talons-first high altitude fishing dive.))

It might be more curiousity than hunger in this case. With their festive plumage, female Ekkies are a rather noticable bird. An Os' main diet is fish, so your Ekkie isn't the most likely target... but they will take other small game including the occassional small bird-(usually young ducks or other waterfowl), so your FID isn't completely off the menu either.

BTW, You want to be really careful about trying to scare a raptor - you might end up breaking a federal or state law or 2.

You could try installing some form of bird deterent like they have to stop pigeons & seagulls from perching; put it up where that BOP likes to sit.

and no offense Tam, but I wouldn't advise anyone to try & attract crows....I know of a few cases where it's created a bigger prob than it solved.
They can be unbelievably annoying and incredibly destructive to the entire neighborhood.

We have crow behind our property. There is a field there that is full of trees. We have almost every kind of wild bird that hangs out back there.
