first vet visit

Just came back from the vets took both the new babies my grey boo and my hans skipper . It was so sad made me cry when they took their blood . I cant belive im a nurse and could not stand them touching my baby with a needle . The vet said that they had gram neg rods in the culture so they are on a " good bacteria " thick green goo and an antibiotic . The blood test results will be back tomorrow and he said that will let him know if either one of them is sick?? Still trying to figure out how they can have gram neg things and not be sick and if they are not sick why are the on stuff . He just told me that sometimes they have gram neg and even if it does not make them sick they should not have it and should be treated . Wow six hundred bucks and dont understand a thing kind of pissed off . When I work with my patients tomorrow will remember what its like to have some one talk over my head .

WBC count

I just wanted to let you know, in case you didn't already, that sometimes WBC counts can be elevated simply due to the stress of the vet visit. I know this is often the case with Eclectus parrots. I do not know if this information applies in this situation or how much they can fluctuate, but I just wanted to put the thought out there. I hope everything works out with your birds and your vet!

I know how you feel and I (think) I read somewhere that some gram negative bacteria is normal and sometimes vets treat for it when they don't need to. I am not a vet and I cant swear but this, I just seem to remember reading it somewhere and thinking "hmmm". I cant remember where I read this, but I only read vet sites and or books by vets, so I am not sure. You might want to be sure your vet is board certified or get a second opinion, as the answers he gave seem much more vague then the answers my vet gives me.

I feel a little better now got ahold of a vet in bakersfield and they gave me some kind words and a follow up appt with them on friday . They were so nice to me when I called told me if If I got to worried or noticed any thing at all that they were open 24 hours . My co workers think ive finally lost it crying over my birds lab results and wanting to see a second vet . Do people every think your a little off because of how you treat your little ones ??
