Help with Diamond Doves

I need your help. I have a pair of diamond doves, Desi and Lucy. I know they are maiting but I am a bit concerned because I have noticed Lucy pecking really hard on Desi's neck to the point where it is very raw and his feathers are gone all around his neck. I separated them, Took Desi out and put hin in a smaller cage, they calmed down so after a few hours I tried putting him back in the big cage with lucy. She started pecking really hard on his neck again so I got concerned and put him in the smaller cage. I feel really bad because I know they want to be together and are cooing back and forth to each other but I am worried that his neck will get worse

Does any one have advise for me.

Thanks,
Esther

Do they have adequate nesting materials? I know it can lead to plucking of they don't. Some birds pluck even with nesting materials. Is the cage plenty large so they have space away from each other?
Others will have more helpful advice. I don't breed so I can't be of much help. Sorry.

If they are mating, then the next step in nature would be preparing a nest.
