Question Those bossy little parrotlets!

Some of you may remember from a previous post that I am considering adopting a second bird...I'm still open to the breed since there are several I'm interested in. (mainlt considering at this time a meyer's, budgie, another p'let.) Have any of you fellow p'let owners ever added a second bird to your home with great success on behalf of the p'let? I would love to get a second bird, but I imagine the birds getting along and being out at the same time, playing together, etc. Is this a completely unreal expectation for these little household bosses? I realize of course that it wouldn't be like that at first, but will Pedro ever adjust to a little friend? He has done sooo well with warming up to us and finally loves his time out of cage (wasn't so when he was a new baby) but he can be such a little boss when he wants to be. I wouldn't want to get another one if it was too upsetting for Pedro...or for our household!! Thanks for any replies!! :)

It depends on the birds. With peachfaced lovebirds, most wont tolerate another bird of a different species and may even kill or injure the other bird. On the other hand (yes, there is always another hand! less someone chops it off...) I have also seen photos of lovebirds with budgies, conures, p-lets, etc.

I'd say that the same thing could go for a p-let. They can be aggressive hyper birds, but I guess it depends on the birds themselves.

Blake you did nothing wrong. Parrotlets do not get along well with other birds or their own species. Per the handbook for parrotlets, they like their own cages, own time out, etc. Another parrotlet would not be a bad idea if you give the bird his own time out, own cage, etc., but based on my research would not recommend housing them together.

HI Stasia-

I have King Romeo, a 6 yo P'let. He has reigned supreme for almost all of his existence. When I started to think of addind an Ekkie, my dream girl, I was very concened about how His Majesty would react. I set up Bella's cage about a month before she came home. I explained to Romeo that this is where his baby sister was going to live. When I brought Bell home, Romeo was still always the first, for everything. He is the first out in the morning, he is the first to get his food, he's first for everything. I have to watch both parrots while they are both out, but that is how it works with most multiple parrot homes. No matter on what type of parrot you decide on, both will need their own cage, play area and dishes. Good luck with your decision.
