Urgent Assistance!!

Im purchasing this pair, from a lady that cannot take care of them anymore. I will rehabilatate them into better condition. She says the female plucks his shoulder area. What can you see by looking at the pictures. She is coming tommorow. She said the male is a creamino, but I dont think so I think he is a heavily pied lovebird with a blue base color. Do they look healthy? The male looks a little thin.

Oh my lord, you are such an angel to bring them in!

The female looks very much like my Sunny. She looks quite healthy and alert in that pic. I also agree that the male is most likely not Creamino, he does look a tad thin but it could seem that way due to his lack of feathers. My little guy is healthy but trim, maintaining a slim 48.5 grams.

I wish the best of luck to you, I'd love to hear updates on these guys!

I am not very familiar with that type of bird however, when I was talking with the breeder about my TAG I learned a little about how he knew when the birds were ready to breed. The female actually plucked the male bald when she wanted to mate. Could be a possibility?

I would separate the two for awhile, keep in adjoining cages right next to each other. Some of that plucking could be due to the cagemate and the thinness could possibly be due to competition for food etc......No harm to try it anyway..... Good luck...

A friend of mine had three lovebirds (2 females and a male) and both the females plucked the male. Even when the birds were separated (the male and 1 female kept together) the female still plucked the male. The pair bred and had healthy babies, all brought up in a nice soft nest lined with the males feathers'.

You should always keep new additions in a different area of the house, or better yet, a different house for three months. Have them vet checked before bringing them in. It is imposible to tell from a photo whether a bird is healthy or not, or even by looking at a bird, though sometimes it's obviously ill. The woman who has them now claims she plucks him but perhaps he plucks himself which could be indivcative of illness. Even with these precautins there is a chance you are bringing in disease.

Unfortunately in breeding pairs, one bird could be plucked by the other. Hormonal stress could also cause the one bird to pluck himself as well. I have this problem in my Parrotlet pairs and in my Cockatiel pairs.
If the pair has never been checked by an avian vet it is better to have this done just to be sure the problem is not medical. You may never be able to solve the problem if the plucking has been an on going issue.
