I would say there are a lot of questions that would need to be asked. First are you going somewhere that you will still be able to give him attention like at home? Will you bring his own cage? If not what will he be staying in? And lastly what are your other alternatives?

He would be in his regular cage. We would give more attention than if he were left home alone. As far as attention goes it would not be as much as home but more than if I had someone check on him. I also leave the radio on next to his cage during the day when no one is home so I can bring that with us also.

I would say as long as he has his own cage and you he should be OK to come with. I know I would never feel like someone checking on my babies could be as good as the love we share when together. Have a great little vacation and let us know how your little guy does!
PS I am in NH too!

The only concern I have is that whereever you wind up, the environment is bird safe: no Teflon cookware, candles, open flames, toxic cleaners. That's the ONE thing we often forget when we go to other people's homes with our fildren. Have fun! THE OUTLAW

Car rides
Has your budgie ever been on a long car ride?
My cockatiel, Squeaky, can tolerate car rides up to 45 minutes. After that he starts to get agitated and VERY cranky. And he screams up a storm if the car is moving and it's dark out (I have to leave the dome light on just to keep him quiet). One thing to do when you're riding in the car is keep just a minimal amount of water in the cage. That keeps you and everyone around the cage from wearing it when you hit a bump. |

If the bird knows how to use one.
But I've never had much luck with them. They've either leaked or my cockatiel has bent the edge enough to get them to leak. I've found it eaier to just have a dish. Not that most birds will eat or drink that much due to the stress of driving IMO. |

Have bird,will travel?
You could take the bird with you. Many people do and they can travel well. I would get the bird used to using a water bottle before the trip if he doesn't already use one. Seeing the new travel cage is a good idea so he is familiar with that as well.
Birds are a flock animal. Not only are the humans part of the flock but it can also be any other animal in the household. Being separated from the flock could cause great stress upon a bird. If you take him with you then you will have to deal with stress issues of a new environment that he won't be used to. His behavior may not be quite the same so you would need to expect this as well. |
