Bird bite

Well its two am and just got my daughter home from the ER where she got 7 stiches in her upper lip . Seems that no matter how many times you warn teens about things they have to learn the hard way . The u2 that we got on tuesday has been as sweet as can be but have warned the kids that he has a long history of abuse and bitting so keep your face away from him . hold him love him but no shoulder and no getting your face near him . When we put the baby to bed today he stuck his little beak out of his cage and said kisses and so my 17 year old went over and gave him kisses . Now she has a big fat lip with a big hole in it . I feel so bad for her and please dont think im horrible but feel bad for the bird . I know now she will be scared of him and he will miss her loving on him . Gosh I do sound like a horrible mother

aa cockatoos.. such nasty little guys at times :)...

i do not think you are a horrible mother.. you did the warnings and you are seeing both sides of the story.. thats very good IMO.. most people would hate the bird if it bit one of their kids even knowing the birds history..

atleast she has learnt her lesson right.. i hope her lip heals up well... and that though she may hold a grudge against the too for a while.. that she realizes in the end he is just an animal and they do things that hurt once in a while..

Good for you for realizing this nasty bite was your daughter's fault. I feel bad for her, but it just wasn't the smart thing to do to put your face up to new Cockatoo.

to be honest teens only learn the hard way. I be she won't put her face up there again! she is ver very lucky that is the only damage that she got! 7 stitches is nothing! My U2 cased nerve damage in my thumb, bruised the bone as well as I should have gotten lots of stitches( but I didn't go)! my thumb is still numb in spots and that happened 4 months ago. AND I just got bit again on Thursday! I will be 34 years old this month...and you think I would have learned by now. My thumb area swelled up 5 times the normal size and it is still a little bigger than it ever has been.

In time you will pick up on cues that she is going to bite! It will just take time and lots of observation to learn the signs!

You are not a bad mother. I would have reacted the same way to my kids if they did that, in fact i am constantly telling my 4 year old not to stick his face in the birds face, but he does it anyway. Of course he is only 4, but I do tell him that if he gets bit it will be his own fault.

I think a birdy asking for kisses would be hard to resist... an honest mistake. I hope her lip heals up well and soon! I have got bites from petstore birds for the same reason... they ask for a scritch then bam! They tag you. It's unlucky it was your daughters lip, that would have HURT from a u2... I got bit on the lip by a sun conure on Saturday and that was bad enough (no blood or mark but owch!)

At 17 your daughter now knows better and should feel lucky to only get her lip bitten, hope she's doing ok and will listen to mom from time to time now. My boyfriend is 35 and I still have the urge to whack him with a rolled up newspaper (which is not a training method I've ever used on an animal but am sure it must work with humans heh) when he tries to get one of the parrots to go on his shoulder. He's been bitten too (though not by either of the two birds we have now) but apparently never badly enough. I'm dreading the imminent ER visit too.

Please do not feel bad. Teenagers can be hard headed (don't mind me singing my favorite tune

THAT GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!

"MY KIDS ARE GROWN, MY KIDS ARE GROWN NANNIE NANNIE BOO BOO MY KIDS ARE GROWN!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm very sorry about hearing that she got injured but an accident is an accident. She'll never do it again and will probably warn others from doing the same thing.

I had a party a few years ago and made up a sign saying "Please do not feed your fingers to my birds, they are on a very special diet!!"

7 stitches, oh my gosh. I'm sorry that happened!! It's never fun to get a bite, especially one like that! ^^ r2 - Not all teenagers are bad, and if you've met every single one out there and can make that judgment, that's another thing. Generalizations are a pet peeve of mine, sorry
