Saved a bird tonight

I was driving back from the store and it was getting to be evening. I spotted a live mourning dove sitting right in the middle of a busy road! Usually they flutter off when a car comes but this one just sat there. I pulled over, put my emergency lights on, and sprinted back to the dove. Thankfully everyone was trying to avoid it. I was able to scoop her up but she started to flight and lost about half her tail feathers before I got a good hold of her. She had blood coming from somewhere on her body, as well as blood coming out of her eye so much that I couldn't see the eyeball. The other eye was very watery. I'm not even sure if she could see out of either eye. As I got back onto the sidewalk a cat ran from behind a bush and it was obvious the cat was stalking the bird. I drove with the dove (who was acting stunned at half dead) in one hand while driving with the other hand. I put it in an empty bird cage, called a rescue group, and drove it there. Luckily not too far from my house. By this time the dove was trying to move around the cage, a good sign! The rescue lady took the dove out and it struggled a bit. She did a quick exam and said there was a deep cut in the chest which she would stitch up, and she would give antibiotics. She thought from the way it was fighting that it had plenty of life left in it and would live, although it may have lost sight in one eye.

I'm going to call in a week to see how the bird is doing. Poor thing. I am not sure if the world is just full of lost/sick/hurt birds or if they just keep finding me.

"I am not sure if the world is just full of lost/sick/hurt birds or if they just keep finding me." Probably a bit of both ;) Bird people notice injured birds more than any others would, I guess! Good on you for risking yourself to save the dove when so many others drove straight past... you're a star!

Not just birds either...I notice all animals even turtles that are in the middle of the road! My mom has the same problem. She is a rehabilitator and right now she has 2 baby wrens.
