CBS Nightly News Story On Parrots

CBS Nightly News Story on Parrots and owning them

The Parrots And People Paradox - CBS News

Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing?

and now for my 2 cents.....
I think it's good they are finally addressing the ownership of Parrots and what a huge commitment it is, and stating the facts. They are loud, messy, they bite, and they poop! I did love what she said in the beginning, that to a parrot everything has it's place...on the floor...lol.

The only thing I would have liked to see is them stressing how important education is BEFORE getting a Parrot. If more people researched and educated themselves, maybe there wouldn't be so many in rescues.

I hope it does discourage alot of people from buying that pretty funny birdy.....or maybe educating themselves before making that purchase.

I think its kind of weird she doesnt enjoy having her lorikeet... They dont have to have your full attention 24/7 if they learn to entertain themselves with toys and such.

i didnt like it. they were talking about all the bad things birds do, and they WILL screem, and they WILL pluck, and they WILL poop on everything and every body that gets one gets rid of it, and they all wind up in a shelter and get eutanized. anyway that was my take on it. they started it off with the news of the death of Dom De Louis, and how he was a bird lover and gave to the rescues. i think he would have agreed with gayla, that they should have talked about education an research, and that birds arent really a nasty animal. they didnt say how loving and cuddly they can be and what a great member of the family the can be.

I agree with ROYJOY, there's always two sides to the story. I do believe people need more education on owning birds. It's alot different than a cat or dog where they can fend for themselves, birds can't do that. It's a lot of work for many years to come. I hate to see birds passed around, they have feeling to.

the problem is birds are so often an impulse purchase - beautiful, friendly young bird in a pet store. The people really may not be suited to be parrot owners, or at least to provide a good life for their parrot, so anything that shows the negatives is a good idea in my opinion. When you've heard so many stories about birds banished to the garage or basement living out lives of misery, I think telling people that they are messy, loud and needy is a good thing if it discourages some people who would not be happy anyway with having parrots!

I liked that is was more slanted to the negative side. If folks have a bird, watching that newscast is not likely to change anything, but if it helps unsuitable folks to decide not to get a bird, then that's a good thing, imo.

This is the only thing that made me mad....

Every day at some point I think to myself, 'I can't take it another minute'," Tweti says.

And every few minutes, someone else is buying another parrot.

Sometimes the person buying the bird does know what they are getting into. Not EVERYBODY that buys a bird is an idiot.

I've said this before in another discussion but Mira Tweti strikes me as the "Micheal Moore" of the parrot world. She is controversial and strikes up discussion - which is a good thing - but she should be taken with a grain of salt... or at least have her opinions questioned...

LOL...yesterday Pita was being so cranky, screamy, bitey (hormones) that I told Bee that was a day I wish I didn't have him. I think we all get that way, its normal. People with kids have those moments. We don't mean it of course, but sometimes it gets so frustrating it brings me to tears.

Now those who know me, know Pita is my world. He is my heart & soul, and I couldn't imagine life without him......but there are days when I have to go out and take deep breaths.

It's a challenge owning a bird....EDUCATION IS THE KEY! It takes enormous dedication and patience. Just remember, you have to let birds be birds. They are not domesticated, they are what they are, and have a reason for everything they do...even if we have no clue what that reason is. They allow us into their world, and I look at that as a priviledge not a requirement.

Takes a special person to own a bird.
