The current wording of California Assembly Bill 1122 is unclear about whether it would apply to pet shows, such as bird shows or pet expos, according to the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council.

A California bill that would ban the display and sale of live animals in certain public places like swap meets and flea markets, among other places, could “inadvertently encompass” a number of animal shows, consumer shows and pet industry trade shows, according to the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). PIJAC is calling on the public to contact California legislators to voice their concerns about the proposal, which is scheduled for a public hearing on May 6, 2009.

As drafted, Assembly Bill 1122 would make it illegal for any person to “willfully sell, display, or offer for sale or give away as part of a commercial transaction, a live animal on any street, highway, public right-of-way, commercial parking lot, or at any outdoor special sale, swap meet, flea market, parking lot sale, carnival or boardwalk.”

The bill does not define “swap meet” or “flea market.” In a PetAlert, issued May 5, 2009, PIJAC stated that it has received comments from several show sponsors who questioned whether they fall within the non-defined terms.

I am not sure why these bills are not written better but in its loose language seems like a good thing if written better. It sounds like their intent is "to limit the type of places animals / pets could be sold" and by eliminating certain types of venues ie garage sales, swap meets, and places where anyone can just show up as a backyard breeder / hoarder and pawn off animals could be a good thing. BUT, and a big BUT leaving reputable events like bird shows, rescue events, dog, cat , reptile shows alone... but as always bill needs some serious clarifications and details before we can pass any real judgement.

I HATE seeing pets sold at places like flea markets or - worse - on the side of the road, because it leads to impulse buying by folks who may not be prepared to care for the animal.

However, most folks who go to bird shows, for instance, already know they want a bird, or already have a bird or multiple birds. I think that's a bit different.

Just my two cents.

Bird shows are great to meet a lot of smaller breeders in your area that you wouldnt normally get to meet. Also many smaller bird rescues use it as a great opportunity to get their birds out there.
Would be a shame if you couldnt have them anymore...

That would make a lot of since, but it seems that in our society that there has been a trend towards extremes rather the rational

His point is there isnt any bird show events in utah so no need to ban it ie envious of areas that have them often in your area.

you are correct Kevin. there arent enough bird enthusiasts in Utah to warrent such events. a hand full of us go to the annual "strut your mutt" where dog lovers ooh and aw over our birds. they cant believe my birds can fly outside.
