I know my no vacancy sign was out...

I was given a teil today. I need it like I need a hole in the head. But yes, I did take him. His name is Tweety and he is 8-10 years old. He was neglected in his first home and his second home was not able to keep him any longer due to their work schedule. He is a total sweetie and hand tame, we'll find out about that tame part when I let him out. He does pluck his chest a little, supoosedly for years now. I'm going to set his cage up with more toys and better perches, but this is my first teil. I guess the only question I have is what is the average life span for these guys?

Congrats! I don't know much about tiels other than all the ones I've met seemed super sweet. I can totally relate to the taking on another bird as our "inn" is full as well, but I have a friend who may be rescuing 15 macaws from an elderly man who is terminal. She will be rehoming them cage and all for free, so how's a person supposed to turn that down??

That's sweet of you to take him in. Sounds like he's had a tough life. You rarely hear of plucking tiels, but I'm sure you'll get him all fixed up :)

Congrats, that's really nice of you.

They say 12 to 15 years, not unusual to see one live up until 20 years even some can live up to 30 years.

Here is a pic of Tweety. He plucks under his wings and around his upper chest. I was told that there is probably follicle damage after so many years. He has good food and lots of toys now. I hope he stops plucking, but we'll love him anyway...

Tweety's lucky to have you. What a gorgeous crest he has! My CJ is around 20 years old and going strong. I've had him since he was 6 months old. Good luck and keep us posted!

Wow, I have to applaud you!!!!!!!!!!! 20 years is one of the longest times that I have seen posted that someone has had their bird. I hope to be able to say that one day- my first large bird and I have been together five years now.
