which little birds are trainable?

Hello all,

We are researching getting a small bird as a first family pet. We have narrowed our choices to budgie, lineolated, and parottlet. I am probably going to cross parrotlett off the list becuase I have read they can be more nippy then the others.

Anyway, my question is whether any of these small birds can be trained to do tricks? It is not our main objective but I think it would be a lot of fun if I can do it. I am at home so I have time to devote to this!

Thanks!

Linnies are awesome little birds, and can learn to talk as well. I have a female lutino named Peep, and she is nothing but sweetness and play! The males are more talkative, but my little girl could say "step up" when we brought her home from the bird shop. I really can't say enough about how much we love our little linnie! Here is a pic of Peep.

As far as parrotlets and budgies, I can't say from personal experience, but I think most all parrots are trainable. As they say, there are no bad birds, just bad bird owners. What I'd do is visit some at a bird shop or breeder in your area to get an idea of what each one is like.

With positive reinforcement, most birds can be trained, including Budgies (as you can see in that video!) and Parrotlets. I don't have experience with Linnies, but I'm sure the same applies.

Probably the hardest little bird to train would be lovebirds. They are very spunky and females are especially territorial after maturity. Good luck with which ever species you choose.

Hmmm - too bad you are going to cross off the Parrotlet - I found mine far more entertaining than my budgrigar ever was... And very trainable... But after watching Monica's video I kind of wonder...
