That cage is about the size our aratinga conure is in. It's not really sized for a larger bird. So even thought the cage isn't really all that big, the bar spacing is what is important. 1" is too big for the small to med size birds. If it is 1", the cage sounds like it might pass for an amazon sized bird.
May I suggest checking in with a local rescue and seeing if they have an elderly bird that needs a home. The ages would be a good match, and it would make for a very sweet story.

Caiques are really awesome birds. I have one....but they are super hyper. Mine is never still for a second and prefers hopping on the floor rather than flying. Forget him sitting on a playstand or anything like that!!

What about an alexandrine parakeet? They are larger than conures. Smaller than an amazon, beautiful colors and have a great ability to talk.
