Green Cheeks and Parrotlets (as well as female Lovebirds)are nice but I would never reccommend them as a first bird for kids. They go thru a nippy phase that if not treated properly gets worse and will draw blood and discourage everybody in the family from wanting to interact. Not a good start at all. If no one has allergy issues I suggest Tiel or linnie.

Are their any breeders in your area that handfeed linnies? See if they will let you meet some of their babies, that way you can interact and see if you like them.

I don't believe in "first bird" issues. The youngest "kid" in this case will be 20 years old by the time any bird is likely to have "passed on," maybe much older. This needs to be considered in the purchase of any bird...
