Question How to get rid of fruit flies

We are having a problem with fruit flies around my senegal, Kiwi's cage. We clean the uneaten fruits and vegetables out every day. How do we control this? I read online that you could put white vinegar in a bottle and make a funnel with a small opening in it and the fruit flies would fly in and not be able to fly back out. So far this really hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem and this is what I am doing and it is working. I put about 1/2 inch of apple cider vinegar in a glass (about 4 inches high 3-4 inches across) I put in 2 drops or so of dishwasing liquid and in a few hours I have seen results. I usually put the 2 glasses around where I see them most. Hope this works! I know it has for me!

I haven't tried what asulli suggested, but what I've been doing is when I take up their uneaten fresh food morning and evening, I put it in a mason jar which I cover tightly with some plastic wrap and a rubber band. Then poke holes in the top with a toothpick. The flies will get in and can't get out. Then I take it out back to dump in the garbage. Another somewhat easier way to do this is to put the leftovers in a ziplock bag and leave it partially open. Whenever you see flies in it seal it up and toss it in the garbage. I've also heard that putting some old fruit in the bottom of a wine bottle works well. They get in but can't get out.

I wonder if there is a difference in the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar and white vinegar? Do you put any type of covering on your glass?

Kiwi,
I personally do not I guess they just dive bomb and cannot swim! It seems that they like the apple cider vinegar better. I think that I am also going to try the wine bottle thing. Anything to not have any of those awful little flies.

Let me know what works better for you.

LOL and I'm gonna try the apple cider vinegar! Like you said, anything to get rid of those stupid flies. Mine were pretty much gone last week, and so I quit putting the food in the jars and the baggies, and this week they are back with a vengence! GRRRR!!

Well I was able to catch a good many of them with the white vinegar, but going to buy some apple cider vinegar today at the store. I am going to make a separate post for this, but i was wondering if dried fruits and vegetables would cause fruit flies. I have seen a nice variety of dried fruits and vegetables at the Drs. Foster and Smith catalog.

I can catch hundreds in just a few hours with a smooth funnel sitting in the top of a Jar with a banana peel in the bottom.

Try balsamic vinegar in your bottle, it's sweet. Works for me.
