Trimming a smaller bird's nails may seem a bit tricky at first, but after you get the hang of it, it's no big deal. If you are nervious about it, there are bird groomers, vets, or reputable pet store employees that can trim them for you for a small fee.

If you'd like to trim your bird's nails yourself, it really helps to practice on a larger animal, such as a dog or cooperative cat, because you can see the quick better and get a feel for the nail trimming process. When you are ready to trim your bird's nails, have someone else hold him/her while you cut. It can be tricky to hold a squirming bird and trim at the same time. Remember, you can never cut off too little, but you can easily cut off too much. Take it on the safe side, and do several short sessions, trimming only teenie bits off of each nail.

I use my husbands toe nail clippers on my pionus also on my cats, it works fine just don't cut too much at once, if you have mastered the art of toweling your bird it is a snap

I have always trimmed my birds' nails. I have an infant nail clipper that works great. With the budgies it's easy to see their veins and avoid cutting too far. Moki is more tricky. He occasionally needs just a tiny bit off the tips because it pokes through my clothing when he's on my shoulder and hurts. I have seen him trimming his own nails with his beak, which is pretty cool.
