Handfeeding

Sebastian is a new Parakeet, and he has just learned to trust me. I would like to increase our bond more, preferably through handfeeding. What do you recommend I feed him? I was thinking millet, but I would like to know what you would handfeed your birds to increase trust. Thanks!

I usually feed my bird his favorite fruits and veggies, or hard boiled eggs, he really loves those. So I use them for our training and handing feeding.

Handfeeding is not usually recommended for a weaned bird that is not sick. I would try the millet. It usually works well.

I think they mean handfeeding as in feeding food from their hands! Not baby food from syringes or anything like that.

Hand-feeding small pieces of spray millet is how I tamed my new Budgie, entirely at the bird's pace. Works great.

I used my budgies regular food... only gave them enough food for one day, then the next day, I'd offer them their regular food from my hand. They'd come to my hand to eat. After that was all gone, I'd give them fresh foods. Did this with five budgies, although my goal wasn't to tame them, it was just to see if I could get five, untame, flighted budgies comfortable enough to come to me for food. Sure enough, within a few weeks I had them flying out of their cage to my hand to eat! And I'd get them back in the cage by putting in fresh food for the day!

I did the same thing when I was a kid Monica. Offer the food only from my hand a few times a day instead of a dish. I tamed all my budgies this way. They became really tame from wild child pet store birds.
